Downshifting On Freeeway...

so when i'm in say 6th gear and i need a little extra boost, i downshift to 5th gear (fairly quickly), but when i do this i hear like a 'thump' noise coming from the rear axle area. is this the infamous "clicking" noise from the rear that a lot of people have problems with? or is this different?

No. The famous clicking noise can only be heard at low speeds.

Are you revmatching when downshifting? If you are, it sounds like you are over-revving.

Do you rev match?

Sounds like your just dumping it into a lower gear...
When you do that the drive train gets thumped.

This happens to me sometimes when im driving in MM and im pushing down the gas pedal and switch gears. I hear this "thumping noise" when that happens. Now i just release my foot from the gas when i switch gears

The question is about 6spd MT

AT tranny is a different issue.
I really don't like to downshift in MM when slowing (eg. to an intersection)
It's OK if accelerating though...
I don't get any thump.

Like others said, it sounds like you are not rev matching for your downshift. You have to find the right RPM to downshift. If you over shoot or undershoot the trans will thump.

I don't think that's the case. If you don't rev enough, you wouldn't feel a thump. It would be more like the car jerking. The thump seems more common when over-reving.

Why would you downshift into 5th in the first place? Unless you're doing speeds that don't allow you to put it in 4th... Downshifting into 5th does next to nothing

maybe we have a diff idea of what he meant by 'thump'? i was assuming it was like a 'thud' you hear plus the jerk where you downshift w/o enough revs.

i'd like to believe this was the case since he's new to MTs and he did shift 'fairly quickly'.

for the most part i agree, but sometimes going to 5th gives you enough power to pass a slow driver. but i'm also talking bout when ur in 6th going ~100

but knowing me, you should know that at ~100, its 4th all the way

PS r u still in cali, didnt even notice u changed ur location

LOL gotta love that guy and his downshifting. What rpm do you rev it up to again to put it in 4th when you're doing ~100?

Nah dude I'm still 2 min from you. Just changed my location to "SoCal forum" and you're like the 5th person to ask me if I'm there lol.. not yet.
