That little gate that'll drop in front of 1st when the car is moving...

Wait! . . . Just to avoid some potential confusion here. Are you saying that you are rolling in 1st gear doing approx. 5 mph? . . . And you hate having to shift into 2nd to clear the intersection?
here's a scenario.
i roll out of my driveway in my subdivision. I head down to the main crossroad doing no more than 15, so i stay in 2nd.
I come up to the intersection, rolling up, and both sides are clear. I'm now at 5 mph, but i can't downshift to 1st, and have to stay in 2nd all the way out

Okay . . . Yes, as mentioned previously . . . When in that same scenario at a LOW speed, now . . . I personally push the clutch pedal all the way down, give the gas pedal a small tap to raise the revs and downshift into 1st gear and release the clutch slowly.Originally Posted by Atooraya

see, the problem is that i can't even put the shift **** into 1st gear
i try to push it into first and it there's a sound of some sort of plate grinding, but it's not the gears
maybe some more "smart witty" jokes are necessary?

Hmmm . . . I use this same approach when ever I never to grab a lower gear to pass or prior to entering a turn. I rarely need to downshift into 1st while I am rolling, but when I do need to, as you have mentioned . . . I have had no issues in getting into 1st gear.

This is because people today are too used to trannys with synchros... u have to rev match to first, IE you ahve to drive your MT properly....

is the syncro what's disabling it from me even pushing the shifter into 1stOriginally Posted by EX-250

I've experienced this too... maybe the order matters.Originally Posted by Atooraya

Clutch in, blip the throttle, *then* push it into first and release clutch slowly.
In this order, it's much rougher:
Clutch in, push it into first, blip the throttle, then release the clutch

This is the method, which I have been using without any issues. Once again, I rarely need to do this, because most of the time I am about to stop the car and rather not do the extra work. However, there are times, as mentioned when it may be required or I am just trying to show off the exhaust . . . As I gear down to a stop or to a crawl, so I do not have to stop.Originally Posted by woshiagni

To rev match without synchro, pop the gear into neutral, blip the throttle and then shift into first?
2nd --> Neutral --> Blip to rev match --> 1st
It doesn't work too well when you try to shift into 1st without rev match in neutral first. I fail to see how 'heel and toe' is helpful in this case.... unless you are braking into a turn.

i understand what youre talkin bout... do as everyone else said and "double clutch"
2nd gear... put in clutch and shift to N.... let out clutch.... hit gas to rev to where RPM would be at that speed in 1st gear... clutch in and put it in first... and make sure before you let out the clutch in 1st gear you are still rev matched for that speed... if you are off even a little bit your clutch starts to cry

I understand now. You are close. What you need to do is this:Originally Posted by Raznips

1. Step on Clutch.
2. Shift to Nutral.
3. Blip the throttle.
4. Since your foot is still on the clutch, shift it back to first while EASING it back in. You see, every gear has an engagement point where you can ease the shifter back in while the RPM drops. This is also a good technique if your clutch pedal is broken for some reason. You can do this for every gear and also can take it out of gear without the clutch pedal too by using the same technique. I hardly do this since I can't see why since the car is moving past 5 mph that you need to go into 1st. gear. Anyways, that is the way I do it.

You DO NOT need to double clutch to accomplish this. If you are having trouble, you're doing something out of order....
1) In second gear, push in the clutch
2) As you break the catch point, rev up to approxmiately (give or take 200 rpms) where you would be in first
3) Move the selector from 2nd to 1st... the gate "block" will not happen
This all takes about a half second to acomplish, and requires some timing and footwork, however, you DO NOT need to go to neutral first.

Yes, he is right. I stated to put into nuetral. I only said this to make it easier but once you get the hang of this (like I have), it all but takes about 1 second or so. I personally like to see the rpm rise and fall just a bit and then shift from 2nd. to 1st. It's pretty simple. All clutch (at least the ones I drove) have this so you can't accidently shift into 1st. while going to fast or you will blow your engine.Originally Posted by EX-250

Damn, this is the most confusing thing I have ever read. After reading it 29434 times I think i have an idea. Its all about heal and toe downshifting though. I use it every single downshift and u cant even feel them.
