2005 G-coupe: Grinding when shifting!

I've now owned my 2005 G-coupe for a few months (about 6,000 miles) and every time (i.e. 90% of the time) I'm shifting from 1st to 2nd (or from neutral to 1st, and even from 2nd to 3rd) the stick "catches" and I get a grind.

I very seldom get a smooth shift from 1st to 2nd. I'm pretty disappointed and thought it was just my driving (i.e. that I wasn't releasing the clutch right or not putting it in all the way). However, I don't think it's my driving. I use to own a 1997 Jetta GLX-VR6 (highly modified) and never had this shifting problem with that car. Therefore, it leads me to believe that it's not my driving and that something may be wrong with the car.

I don't have time to deal with this matter with the dealer, so I've just tried to suck it up and cope with it.

Has this happened to anyone else? If so, what was the problem and how did you solve it?

Thanks.

Do a search and you'll find 'a lot' of people have this problem. I have 1000 miles on my 05 and it makes a grinding noise when i start driving and shifting from 1st to 2nd. The dealer says its normal. I don't think it is a gear grind, something to do with the synchros or something else. If you compare it to an actual no clutch gear shift grind then it's very different and you can also feel the difference. It is also hard to smoothly shift from 1st to 2nd, let off the clutch slower and gas before it's all the way up.

I got grinding some in every gear. I was told by dealer that it is not a problem just because ours are mechanical gear boxes and the design it is

That's a bunch of BS. Grinding gears while upshifting is normal?

Re:

So, what do you guys think it is?

Is it just my driving (i.e. not shifting right, etc.) or is it something mechanical with the car that I need to contact the dealer for?

i think bring the car back to the dealer and get it covered under warranty or you'll pay for it later.

Hmmm . . . I have been driving MT's of all makes for some 30 years. I have probably experienced actual gear grinding . . . Perhaps a handful of times and in those instances it was always operator error, which is better than it being the car, itself.

Tell ya what . . . Simply try this for kicks. Shift at 3k rpm in every gear. Prior to grabbing the next gear make damn sure that the clutch pedal is fully depressed then shift (DO NOT APPLY ANY PRESSURE TO YOUR SHIFTER UNTIL YOU HAVE FULLY DEPRESSED THE CLUTCH PEDAL ALL THE WAY DOWN). Try this through the entire gear box. I really can't see how gear grinding is expected to be a normal occurrence. If that exercise works out, then move up in rpm. Give it a try. Let us know what happens. Good luck!

Hey, listen . . . I do not wish to come off as an A$$, here. However, please do not allow the dealer to tell you that this is normal. If this shifting behavior is accepted/designed as normal by Infiniti, I would then be quite disapointed with their product design.

I have not experienced any of this so called gear grinding nor has by brother with his '04 6MT Sedan.
