Pinging Engine Noise??

Hey guys i just realized that when i hit the throttle and rev the engine, there is a ping noise coming from the engine... i was wondering if that was normal?? I have a z tube and thats about it ...can this be causing the noise? I am really not a fan of this sound and its starting to make me nervous.. i hope i didnt do anything wrong. Has anyone else ever experienced this ping noise before? it pings after i let off the throttle?? should i put my stock (g) tube back in?? I no im not supposed to be revving the engine at all but my friends wanted to hear if the z tube really made a difference

no its not normal, your motor should not be knocking/pinging. Did you put in regular gas or premium? If you put in premium, and it still continues, take it to the dealership, and try to replicate the sound there.

Sounds like a octane level/early detonation issue. Like the other said, make sure you use the appropriate grade of fuel. If you use too low of an octane, the gas in the cylinder expoldes too early causing the "ping" sound.

I've had the same problem if I keep it in a higher gear. After I've slowed a little and I give it some gas at that real low RPM in a high gear I get some cackle from under the hood...and I always run 93/94 premium. I'm taking it in next week for 3700 mile ckup. I'll let you know if anything is resolved.

I've had 3 VQ's now and never heard any pinging at all.
Make sure your fittings are tight and no air leaks, and that the gas you use is good - (may have been a bad batch of gas).
If it persists, have the dealer check the timing. It can go off.

I am also experiencing this proclaimed pinging... however mostly when cold... yet if i rev past ~3K rpm, then there usually is no noise...

Test drove with the dealer twice they said it's normal - said it's the tranny..? I guess if it's really bad it'll crap out on me before warranty expires? what do you guys think?

My engine does the same thing. Sometimes when I have driven for 20 minutes or so i'll open the door and I can hear a ticking noise that gets faster as I rev the engine slowly to 3k rpm... only happens sometimes - I have a stillen CAI + ztube and I did the ECU reset..another thing I noticed is the passenger airbag light is off? caused by ecu reset maybe? I have 1700mi on the car, thinking about doing an oil change...when I had my S2000 the pinging always stopped when I put some fresh royal purple in it - gotta wait till around 6k mi to do that though... BTW I run 93 octane

I get that noise too. Usually when the engine is cold in the first five minutes. The funny thing is it doesn't happen all the time.

Hey, you guys should really read up on the sedan threads!

Here is the solution to the problem (in most cases I would think...)
