Disappointed in the performance of G

Well, I was bored tonight and decided to go for a drive at 3:30AM. I took my car onto the highway and decided to see for the first time how good the high-end accleration is. I barely put the pedal to the floor, and in few times that I did, I only ran up to about 80mph since I didn't want to risk getting a ticket. Anyway, I frist scanned the highway for cops, and then on the way back, I gunned it only to be disappointed. It just felt so slow after 3rd gear... It felt like it took forever to get to 120mph, which is when I said "**** this... the car is barely moving now" and shut down. This might be because I'm coming from turbo cars such as MKIV Supra that I eventually upgraded to close to 500rwhp, and FC RX-7 with 290rwhp. Maybe I was expecting too much...

Anyway, it's not only the acceleration that disappoints me. The car feels much too heavy to be a good handling car. I guess that's the price I pay for more luxury...

Don't get me wrong. G35 is still a very nice car with a good mix of performance and luxury. It just doesn't satisfy me enough in performance and I feel like I made a mistake purchasing this car because I wanted some luxury after coming from forementioned cars. I rarely do high-speed runs, but when I do, I want some satisfaction and adrenalin rush from it... and not shutting down because I was bored. I just wish there were other choices in same price range with better performance... I guess I'll have to give up the luxury part for that.

I was planning to do some non-FI mods along with exterior mods to my car, but it looks like I'm just gonna can those ideas altogether. I guess I'm just gonna keep it as it is, and then sell it in next year for Evo IX MR. I feel like a more performance oriented car would better suit me, and I can sacrifice some luxury for that. Just thought I'd post my overall thoughts about the car after owning it for 11 months.

BTW, since sig is not working, my car is '03.5 6MT.

You are right about the G's lack of performance, but why did it take you so long to figure it out? I knew it after a five minute test drive. I'm accustomed to fast cars; my two prior cars were an M3 and 996. The reason I "moved down" to a G35 is that it looks great, handles well, and is priced right. My '05 G has a great looking interior and it's a very comfortable car.

The M3 and 996 on the other hand have great performance, but neither car is very comfortable nor easy to drive. Even though I live and work in the country, I was able to drive those cars hard for less than 5% of the time. The other 95% I was simply stuck in traffic. So it finally dawned on me that it was foolish to spend $80K+ on an uncomfortable car that I rarely got to drive hard.

So if you bought the G to be a street racer, you made a bad choice. Almost every other performace car is faster. On the other hand if you bought the G because it's well built, looks great, handles well, and is comfortable, you made a great choice.

Its a low geared car. Just mod it.

That's a shame you're not satisfied. Why on earth did you buy it? It performs well for the power it has. Your frame of reference is something totally different.

G performance

I've been fairly impressed with my G's top end. My prior ride was a '99 E 320 (stock) and one thing I assumed i'd be giving up is that "vault" feeling of a benz/german car at speed. I found it to be quite boring in the benz, the thing was so stable at speed that you can put the cruise control on at 125 and eat breakfast. (and no i don't normally drive 125, but I do like to stretch it out on our local "autobahn" here.

Like I said i was really impressed as far as the stability of the G. I'm not sure if it's the sport tuned supension or the air diffusers that keep it so nicely planted at speed, but I must say i was impressed as such stability from a *** car. I thought mine pulled pretty well, mine (an AT) shifted out of 4th at 137 and pulled nicely to 145 or so until i ran out of room. I was (yeah i know dumb) trying to hit the 155 governor on it. I know, boys never grow up do we?

I could imagine it would be hard to go from a heavily moded 500 HP car to a G. You just couldn't help but be disapointed. Like the other poster I went "down" if you call it that from the Benz as the G makes soooo much more sense from a cost perspective as I regularly put 50K plus miles on a car per year. While a Benz/most german cars can certainly go a million miles, the maintenance (even self done) will kill you over the long haul. The only other disappointment for me was the lack of sound deadening in the car...i can't figure why the Japs don't get that..do they just like road noise? It's not like it would be super expensive (i wouldn't think) to get some good sound deadening in the thing on the assembly line. I was really surprised at the total lack of sound deadening from the back of the front seats to the bumper. (haven't dug into the front area yet). Number one on my list to do is get some fat mat in the thing and possibl fill a gap or two with foam.

Like you said, in the end the G is not a purest sports car by any stretch of the imagination. Personally, I have a G and a miata for the purest in me. Much safer too as going 80 in a miata is more exciting than going 140+ in the G. Plus it's a go kart on the handling end. You can pick up a good miata for about three to five grand and do a few mods and have a ton of fun in the process!!

Sorry to hear of your disappointment in the G, but it is a GT car for sure and a luxury (well sort of) ended one at that. Get your mods on and you'll find you can kick that wonderful motor up a notch or two or three!!

Sorry to hear of your disappointment but that's what test drives are for. If you wanted brute force from the factory at a reasonable price, you should have considered the GTO. They go for 32-35K with 400hp and I find the interior to be only slightly less luxurious than the G. The seats may be better...at least for me. I'm big and the GTO seats were thickly bolstered. You can't beat that Corvette engine for a 32K car. The exterior is sort of plain but nothing a nice set of 19's won't cure. The healight treatment looks better than the G imo...I hate the headlight design of the G. Being American or Austrailian may be a drawback but from what I see on this board, several people are having reliability issues with the G...it may not be superior to the GTO in fit and finish either.
As others have said, just mod the car to get that extra power you crave.

That's a great idea. My other two rides are an '05 dodge caravan and an '01 sunfire so I experience that all the time.

You can't compare Supra/Rx-7 performancewise /w a G. Of course the performance is no where close to where a RX-7 let alone a supra. you basically get what you pay for, $35k luxury sport coupe, this car was never made to go fast, it just looks effin HOT. i mean sure you can spend 10k+ on kits to make your G 500+ HP. but is it worth it? while you can simply buy an evo and put in a small amount and it will go places the G can never be. the cars like evo,supras,rx7's etc, are all made strickly for performance. i was even suprised that my friends evo actually had a decent stock system, and it actually had "some bass". if your looking for a performance car, then im sorry i have to burst your bubble, but you just wasted $35k. if you want a car that looks sexy as hell, sounds sexy and everything else, then you spent your money wisely .

i ride in my friends evo xiii once in a while, and i have to tell you the quality of the ride is S**T, but its fast as hell i have to admit. you either you go ***** out on perfrmance, like a evo, or ***** out on luxury like a benz. but however you can get the best of both worlds and get a Infiniti G35 Coupe
