New Infiniti G35 to Debut at New York Auto Show

The midsize luxury car has been a brand-defining product for the Infiniti range in the U.S.

Nissan North America Inc.'s Infiniti luxury brand will debut the next-generation G35 lineup at the New York Auto Show in April.

Jed Connelly, senior vice president-sales and marketing, NNA, tells Ward's the '07 midsize luxury sedan and coupe will take the vehicle “to the next level. We're thrilled with it,” he says.

Current Infiniti G35
The midsize luxury car has been a brand-defining product for the Infiniti range in the U.S. Following its March 2002 debut, Infiniti sales went from 52,630 units in 2001 to 70,973 in 2002, with the G35 accounting for 34,775 vehicles.

Sales of the G35 stand at 57,521 units through October, down 2.1% from the same period year-ago, according to Ward's data.

Despite debuting just three and half years ago, the G35 has aged fast as restyled entrants, such as the Lexus GS and BMW 5-Series, have stolen some of its market share.

“It's nice that in three short years other people have seen us as the target (competition),” Connelly says.

He declines to describe specific changes to the G35's new styling, but says, “We understand what we have is a really good thing, and we're going to be careful with it,” indicating the '07 G35's looks won't be too radical a departure from the '03 model.

Meanwhile, Connelly says Nissan plans to show a refreshed Quest minivan at February's Chicago Auto Show.

The '07 model, which will get a restyled interior, complete with new instrument panel, should help boost the vehicle's sales, which have slipped 12% calendar-year-to-date.

Connelly blames a stagnant minivan segment and tough competition for softening sales, adding early quality issues – and not its styling – also have played a role in the Quest's under-performance in the U.S. market.

Another divisively styled vehicle, the Infiniti FX cross/utility, will get a refresh next year, with the '06 model going on sale in January.

Connelly blames tough competition in the growing midsize luxury CUV segment for the FX's January-October 11.3% sales decline, not faulting its edgy styling. (See related story: Midsize Luxury CUVs Struggle to Find Success)

“I think the styling is the strength of the vehicle,” he says of the FX. “We realized when we built the vehicle that it was polarizing. You either love it or hate it, but that is what you want.

Personally, I don't see anything useful with this article. Looks more like a bunch of "Hype" then anything else.

Well, my question is: Should I take delivery of the 2006 G35 coupe I bought, which is expected to arrive late this month, or should I wait? The idea of buying a lame-duck model, particularly without getting a fire-sale price, is unsatisfying.

I assume that if the new model is unveiled in April, it should be available over the summer--that is, less than a year after the 2006s hit the market. I doubt they would show it way ahead of time, as it would deter sales of the current model.

JMHO...but I don't think you'll see an early release for a "refreshed" car.
With NYAS starting mid April,...
marketing & promotion through summer...
in the dealer pipeline early fall.

While perhaps not "useful" by the most strict definition of the word, I personally think it is exciting to have the date of the release of the next G35.

For someone who is considering buying now, this information might actually be useful since they only have to wait about 5 months (through winter no less) to see the new model and then decide if they want to buy 06 or 07.

Actually, I don't think there was anything in your post that was "useful"

If you have not bought yet, then you should just wait to see the next generation g35. It is going to be winter, so that would be a plus of waiting to see what the next gen looks like. I hope Nissan/Infiniti does a sick job with the next gen, I know they see the competition, and want to try and take them down, hopefully they will get the job done. Without a doubt the next gen should be well into the 300+ hp, so can't wait to see the redesign and new specs.

Well, the difference is that my comment was a Reply to an article and NOTnot meant to be Useful hehe. I would say buy the 06. I had the same dilemma when I bought my 05: Should I wait for get the 06 (this was back in July). So, I opted to get the 05 and not wait 5 or 6 months for a car that I wanted right away I say, get the 06 unless you really want to wait for an 07, which you probably already know is a new model (read: buggy, more things to go wrong). Just my .02 (hope this is more helpful )

I thought G35 is in a different category from Lexus GS and Bimmer 5-series? What an article!!!

G35's interior space is closer to mid size sedans like the 5 series, E Class and GS rather than the entry luxury sedans.

Wouldn't the next g35 take some styling cues from the upcoming GT-R?

I take it as a compliment to be in the same category as 5-series...I mean I know the G was a 3 series killer, but this is like playing in the majors...
