Wheel Hop?
Hey guys, I just had a few runs in my G today. I noticed that at the launch, it seems like my car is wheel hopping? My friend says that he didn't see it hopping or anything when I launched, but I could have sworn I felt it. I launched about 4 times, and at 2 of them felt like I was hopping. If I did hop, how bad is it for the car? anyone else experience hopping?
wheel hop puts stress on the tranny i think... and whne u launch u put stree on the tranny too... but i do it all the time... in the wet or mildly wet wheel always hop... i dont think u can really see wheel hop...
Rear wheel hop
I am running into this problem too, and its so annoying! I sometimes like to setup for a corner by breaking loose in the straight and drifting into the apex. I know I could do this on other cars before no problem(ie:Mustang). Though, my 911 had wheel hop too, I guess when they designed these cars their goal was maximun traction, they didn't have it in mind that people might actually prefer spinning the tires and drifting. I noticed this only happens when the car was in a straight line but if you over accelerate into a corner it would just oversteer normally. I road race but would like to dable in drifting for fun. The preference in road racing is minimal wheel spin and traction loss but with drifting it's the opposite. Anyway, has anyone come up with a solution to the rear wheel hop problem yet? Traction bars? Heavier springs?? I'd like to know where to start so not to waste time and money. How are the pro-drifters setting up there G's?
probably caused by the differential being slightly isolated from the subframe. in short, the subframe where it gonnects gives about a half to 3/4 of an inch. many other nissans they sell subframe spacers, to take up this space and give u a solid launch. 240sx and 300zx and many other cars they offer them for. dunno about the g35 yet.
All cars experience wheel hop. It happens when the springs load during a launch and unload quickly when the tires begin to break traction. This continues until the springs equalize or until you regain traction. It's just something that you have to put up unless you want to install coilovers or springs with a massive spring rate. That's why drift setups are always sprung very heavily, so that they will not hop too much. Hope this helps.

Thanks very much. I kind of suspected the spring rating was off on the rear. Probably more geared for a luxury ride than performance. I plan on buying lower springs anyway so I'll probably go with a higher rated spring too. Not sure what JoshBsZ was talking about but if you can go into more detail about what you meant by spacer for the differential? Is there a product available for order to fix that? Anyway, thanks again.

actually, wheel hop is usually caused by a bind in the suspension. This can usually be solved by swapping out the soft rubber bushings for either hard poly bushings or heim joints.
Uniftunately, I don't think anything makes a set of hard poly bushings for out stock suspension arms. therefore, I swap to aftermarket arms should do the trick!

Reopening an old thread.
My first post too. I had some wheel hop this morning, let off the gas as soon as it occurred. However, now there is a grinding sound coming from the right rear wheel. Any ideas? Thanks.

wheel hop issues
I just bought a new 05 g35 and am really frustrated with wheel hop. It doesn't do it while cornering, but anytime i try to launch the car, rather than the rears just breaking loose, it wheel hops violently and i have to get off the thing.
I thought for sure simething was wrong, since i wouldn't expect this from a performance car, but the dealer tech said this was normal for the car and suggested playing with tire pressures..
This didn't help.
I'm pretty dissapointed about the whole thing. What good is 300 hp if you have to lauch softly or can't do stupid things like burnouts???!!!!!!
Does anyone know for sure of any products, be them springs, bushings, etc that will eliminate wheel hop? THanks

i remember me being stock with 19's I used to launch at 3K RPM and had little to none if any wheel hop...
practice makes perfect... take it to the track and practice there. i've got it down to I have no wheel hop or wheel spin

Every car that has a indipendent rear suspension wheel hops VERY VERY badly!! I know my G does as soon as the tires break loose. Indipendent rears are designed for corners not drag racing.
If running a stock set up try not to dump the clutch.. get bout 3500RPM and slip the clutch dont let the car bog, and once you feel the G start to move you can pretty much put it to the floor and it will hold.
They make many after market parts to prevent wheel hop if your gonna be serious about going straight. Upper lower control arms is where I would start. I would look around on the Supra forums or the 03-04 Cobra forums and see what these guys are doing to prevent wheel hop on a indipendent rears. My Cobra is a solid axels so i really never had this problem. Good luck.
