Do the new '05/'06 interiors hold up better than the '03/'04 with rattles/noises?

Do the new '05/'06 interiors hold up better than the '03/'04 with rattles/noises?

I could really use some help here....

I'm all ready to make a decision on a G35 coupe. I know there's been a lot of talk on here about the rattle problems with the car. What I wanna know is have the new interiors been dealt with at all as far as the rattles/noises that the interior has?

My friend has an '03 G35 coupe with 33,000 miles on it and it seriously sounds about as UNsolid and noisy as my '97 CAMARO with 80,000 miles on it.

That's just ridiculous. If I'm gonna spend close to 40k on a "luxury" coupe, it had better hold up better than my pos Camaro. And rattles and shakes and stuff like that drives me crazy....can't wait to sell my Camaro!

So can anyone tell me that an '06 is going to be solid and quiet and have a well built interior? Anyone with some miles on an '05 that can give their input?

I hope so, cause the G35 would be a perfect car for me if so, I love everything else about it. But the ability for the interior to hold up is very important to me since I drive a lot and will drive the heck out of it.

Thanks!

Tim

Almost all cars rattle. I've owned a $80K 996 that had several rattles. Bottom line is that all rattles can be fixed. It's a minor issue, it just needs to be worked on. The big challenge is finding the source of the rattle. On my '05 I had one persistent minor rattle which sounded like it was coming from the passenger door. The rattle wasn't very loud and was very intermitten. So I took it to the shop and they took off the panel on the passenger door and retorqued the bolts. It didn't help. Then finally because of maybe temperature changes, it got very cold one night, the rattle became loud enough and persistent enough that I could identify the source. It was the instrument cluster in the center console. Now I have no rattles.

So if something rattles, identify the source and the rattle can be easily fixed. In my book a rattle isn't something that would deter me from buying a car.

Bottom line is test drive the G35 coupe and then test drive the competition. I test drove a $44K BMW 330 before I bought the G35. I gave a slight edge to the G35 in performance and since it cost almost $10K less, the decision was easy. What really cinched it for me is that I was fortunate enough to see an
'06 330 parked next to an '05 G35 coupe. No contest whatsoever. The G35 is far and away a much better looking car than the 330 IMO.

Rattles are definately annoying. And at one point I was perhaps obsessed with taking care of every rattle no matter how minor. However, a car is always moving and being jarred around. No matter how well a car is put together, you'll get rattles. Take for instance, my parents have an 02 Camry. That thing had rattles like no other and the dealer just made things far worse. Even their Lexus does, but its an older car and is expected. Whether a car has MORE rattles than others is really a judgement call and how sensitive you are to them. Certainly, there are some common rattles in the G35 which can be taken care of. I've had my 05 since May and really the only thing that has bothered me enough to take care of was the clock finisher squeek which I resolved yesterday (per the TSB) with $2 felt tape I got at Home Depot. All other minor "ticks" and intermittent "creaks" I just ignore now and feel happier about it. Especially since removing panels just really cause more problems further down the line.

I have an '06. I had some squeaking from the cupholder area and I just got it fixed yesterday. Besides that, the car is solid so far.

Hmm ok. I understand that no car is going to be perfect. And one or a couple rattles is not a big deal. But when you hit a crack in the road and it sounds like half the interior just shook up and down (like in my friends '03 G35) that's annoying enough to make me reconsider.

And obviously as the miles add up its gonna loosen up a little, but that's why I'm asking cause I'll be driving 20k+ miles a year on city streets/freeways and I want it to hold together better than my Camaro!

Any other opinions?

Thanks guys.

I had a 97 Camaro SS a few cars ago, for about 2 years. Compared to the Camaro, my 05 G35C 6MT is a very well built car with no real problems whatsoever. My only minor annoyance was a rattle in the drivers side dash vent that was fixed on the first visit to the dealer. The G has much better sound insulation than the Camaro so you will notice little sounds that you wouldn't have heard otherwise.
