Holy Whole Shot! Shifting Down the Road?
Holy Whole Shot! Shifting Down the Road?
Hey hey all "G" fans...
I am relatively new to fast starting cars and I want to go out and practice some whole shots and shifting down the road so that when I do get a frisky tin can next to me I won't just blow it and get smoked and cause our community any shame...
I know that shifting down the road is the part where the knowledge of our car comes into use. Since we all share the same good taste in looks, power, and class:
My question to you all is what is the best and/or your best technique for this. I understand that I need to find my Girl's "Sweet Spots" so as to know when it's not beneficial to take her all the way to red line because some cars don't have peak horsepower at red line, some do. I am not real sure where the shifts occur with our G's (i.e., shifting at 200 - 300 RPMs before our redline?.) My friend has told me that I want to get into second from first as quick as possible as this keeps you high in your power-band, where you want to be. So I am excited to practice this and I would like to use your experience to help me out....
So any advise will be extremely appreciated... Thanks all and have a "G" Day!

Re: Holy Whole Shot! Shifting Down the Road?
I shift at redline every time for my best performance...but I am basing that on racing a coupe a few weeks ago...where he seemed to shift a bit before redline whereas I squeezed every last drop out of the gear before shifting, and I was pulling on him the whole time (both identical 6mts). I haven't actually gone to a track to test this though, I'd be interested to see if anyone has.
Re: Holy Whole Shot! Shifting Down the Road?
I heard an old veteran say that horsepower takes the glory but it's the torque that does the work, I agree!
I also agree with MANI, take it to redline, the next shift will drop your RPM's to the area where the best torque output is, somewhere around the 5000 rpm area.
That torque will pull you to the horsepower peak , and consecuently give you best performance.

I shift near redline but not at redline because i've heard bad things about bouncing off the limitter. (bad for the engine supposedly)
How to shift-down (on highway-for passing purposes)
1) Cruising in 6th gear.
2) clutch and put into Nuetral.
3) release clutch.
4) rev to about 4,000rpm (this is called Rev-matching)
5) clutch and shift to 3rd
6) pass that car! shift to 4th then to 6th (or leave in Nuetral to coast back down to highway speeds and then rev-match to 6th gear)

Just out of curiousity, why go to neutral and release the clutch? Can't you just (from 6th), clutch in, rev-match, shift to 4th, and release clutch?
Re: Holy Whole Shot! Shifting Down the Road?
Don't be down shifting to 3rd unless you are going less then 70mph. 4th is usually just fine and you can use that up till 100mph

Re: Holy Whole Shot! Shifting Down the Road?
yeah thats double clutching, makes it so that the gears are in sync = Much less work on the synchros
if your shifting down 1 gear you dont really have to double clutch, but if your shifting from 6 to 3 you really should double-clutch, especially because of the "6MT 3rd gear grinding problem/syncro failure"

Re: Holy Whole Shot! Shifting Down the Road?
every gear can only reach up to a certain mph...make sure you know those numbers for each gear...for example...when you're going 80, you don't want to shift to 2nd gear, you'll break something...other than that, just follow what the others said above`

Nah... not to worry there Rambo. The rev limiter is in place specifically so you don't harm the engine.
No, the reason you want to avoid the rev limiter is because it essentially "kills" the engine for a second or so, and instead of accelerating you're just sitting there with the pedal down, bumming out with zero power. It's a depressing feeling for sure, but it doesn't harm the engine.
