1st to 2nd shift

Ive noticed the only way i get a smooth 1st to 2nd gear shift is if i shift really low (under 2500 rpm) or when i rev high in 1st, then i have to delay the engagement of the clutch for 2nd gear, which im not sure is good for the car since i shouldnt have to feather the clutch in 2nd gear . what im i doin wrong, cus it only happens on the 1 to 2 shift

It's a matter of finding the proper rpms to match the shift to. I've heard that the g's rpms take a little longer to come down when shifting, so a slower shift should get you a smoother shift.

I have the same problem too, but it happens when I go from 1 to 2, and then from 2 to 3. Sometimes it shifts smoothly and other times it doesn't. A lot of the times, I even have to force it back into first when I have to downshift or put it into gear.

Same problem here .. smooth shift (1 to 2) at lower RPMs (2 to 2.5 K) .. smooth shift (1 to 2) at RPM (4.5 to 5 K). Usually the gear grinds when going to 2nd if not smooth.

I have seen videos of people releasing their clutch. Its like so fast. Kick and release in less than a second.

I dont problem getting the car into gear....thats always fine, my problem is the release of the clutch...i think Msedanman is rite....just a mistiming of the revs....jus wondering why it would be different at 2nd gear and nowhere else

+1... look down at your rpms when your shifting. go to like 3000 rpms hit the clutch shift and release... where do the rpms end up? that's where u need to be. if they drop 1500 rpm then everytime u shift from 1-2 u need to rev match that drop in rpms for a smooth shift. another way of doing it is by the feel of the car. if the car consistently feels like it lurches forward after your shift... then your giving too much power. if the car feels like it's slowing down or braking after your shift... then your not giving it enough power. take a breathe, go slow and u'll eventually get it.

the spacing on the gears for 1-2 is much different then all the others. that's why your getting more problems there.

Sorry for bringing up the topic again but after 4 months of driving the G,I still find it impossible to get a smooth 1 second shift on the 1-2 shift. Because it seems like it takes more than 1 sec for the revs to drop to the rpms of 2nd gear at the same speed. If i try to shift fast(not fast actually within 1 sec), there will always be the clunk. Unless I let the clutch out really slowly.
How do people even drag race the G, with the 1-2 shift being so notchy and unsmooth? It takes longer time than the rest of the gears to shift from 1 to 2 ( just moving the shifter) cause of the notchiness. Its feels like the shifter is trying to squeeze past a gate to get into 2nd and gets stuck for a few tenths of a second before getting in 2nd.

That is exactly what I experience, and my car now has almost 16k miles at roughly 7 months of age. What really ticks me off is that my wife, who has been driving stick *much* longer than me, says she can't feel it.

As for racing, I thought I was shifting reasonably fast. After watching Alberto's in-car video of his shifting, I now realize that I am dog slow. I've been working on it(the 1-2 in particular) when I can, and I have to absolutely JERK that thing to get it to shift quickly. No matter how fast I shift it, I can still feel 2 distinct phases: entering neutral, then entering second. As for the notchiness, I've always compared it to trying to stick a square peg into a round hole.

I even experience the same thing in my AT in MM mode. When I'm really Reving High and go to shift to Second there is a Delay and then the car jerks forward when it finally grabs the gear/pavement whatever. I asked about what to do in my AT without much help I just hope it's like that for ever car not just my AT.

you need to roll off the gas slowly and smoothly and take your time.
clutch engagement should be slow and gentle too, but no slip.

if you're getting abrupt engagement or slipping into 2nd, you're doing it
wrong.

If you put it that way, its possible but the complete shift is going to take like 2 seconds i think?

when do you ever have to shift into 1st gear while moving??? Any manual youwould have to force into 1st gear, 1st gear is mean to get you going, it's never meant to be used once you're in 2nd or above. Plus it's wasted time shifting, even if you were pulling 1000 rpm in 2nd, it would be better to just keep the car in 2nd gear and floor it...
