OEM 19inch tire nailed! need advice

My TPMS light has been coming on every 2 weeks for the last couple of months, so I figured it was just the weather causing air pressure to drop. Today I checked, and only my rear right tire was low, by about 10psi. Finally took the tire off, and there was a huge nail on the inside sidewall. Obviously not fixable, the tire place wants about 500 to get a new potenza re050a.

I noticed on tirerack.com they have the oem rear tire for 280+shipping. I am paranoid that this will happen again to the tire and I won't be covered (tirerack road hazard only applies if you buy set of 4). Looking at costco.com, they have a selection of 245/40/19's to choose from but no re50a's. Buying from costco would give me piece of mind in term of road hazards and warranty, but do you guys think it would be good to have a non matching tire? Also, the tires available at Costco.com are potenza S03 pole position, michelin pilot sport (regular, A/S, or PS2), BFG gForce KDW2. According to tirerack.com, the only ones from the costco tires that have matching sets are the pilot sport regular and PS2.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Patrick

Im not 100%, but I'm pretty sure its a no-no to mix tire types. Can't you plug it? Most tire places say they cant but you can buy them at Wal-Mart. I found a nail in mine a couple months back and now its fine, although Im not certain if you can plug a sidewall.

that's right....it's not good to mix tires. When you do that, you mix road handling characteristics such as braking and grip......not good.

Patching side-walls are a no-no. If the nail was on the actual tread, then the tire is patchable. If you go to a Discount Tire store, they'll usually display a tire with strip of red along the tread to indicate the region of damage that they can repair. Patman530, is there a Discount Tire store in your area? If there is, you can purchase insurance on all your tires for about sixty bucks a piece. I believe you get a discount on the insurance on any new tire that your purchase and get installed by them. I purchased my potenza rear potenza for about 330 with installation at Discount Tire... again, I'm not sure if they're in your area. Hope that helps. I ran into the same situation as yourself. However, if things weren't bad enough, I had to get my rear tire replaced twice because I ended up getting two nails within the same week.... (on the same tire, which makes it all the more ironic).

Definitely looks like you got it while rolling alongside a curb. Imagine shooting a nail-gun at that particular angle.

RockG - Thanks for the link, I just ordered the OEM tire from discount tires for $300+tax. Also, I am going to purchase the replacement warranty they have for all 4 of my tires ($49 per tire) because I have a feeling something might happen to one of my tires again before they wear out.

Thanks to all for the advice

I've asked about the RE050a tire at Costco and they said it's about 280 installed. BUT they have to special order it and it could take a month. Given this is in Hawaii but it should be applicable... Just try give your local Costco Tire Center a call.

Patman530 -- Glad I could help. I had the same thoughts as you did shortly after my incidents and ended up purchasing the replacement warranty for all 4 of my tires.
