Nav screen vs aftermarket for DVD

I am looking to finally order my G35c, and I am contemplating whether or not to order a Nav system with it. Unlike the US where everything seems affordable (less taxes), us Canadians have to shell out $3400 bucks for that thing. Even though it purpose is for Navigation, I was wondering if anyone had any comments on the quality of the screen for DVD playback.

More importantly, this dashboard is not standard DIN, so how would one add an aftermarket unit in there without butchering the dash or completely replacing the dash trim plates. If there was a way, then this would be an interesting option, since you can pick up a fairly new LCD/DVD in-dash unit for about $1000 US off of eBay.

Please help in this decision as I have to make up my mind now when placing my order......

Re: Nav screen vs aftermarket for DVD

I have the infiniti nav and about the only thing it has going for it over aftermarket is its seamless integration. I really like how the screen slides in and pops out and the stock look (which is also good for resale value). But I don't plan on using it for watchng DVDs, playing games, and all that.

If I could get an aftermarket nav that integrated as seemlessly as the infiniti one though, I'd buy it in a second - I would love to have voice recognition and touch screen.

Yes, definitely check out the link s2k2sti posted. I've linked it here:

On that thread, I posted some pics of the JDM double din dash and a pic of an installation with an aftermarket in-dash DVD nav unit.

The stock nav is expensive, but as already mentioned it has the popup coolness factor going for it and the clean stock installation. There are many posts here and on Fresh Alloy that explain how to connect a DVD player to it, and the quality is very good. Do a search.

Using the JDM double din dash and an aftermarket in-dash dvd nav unit is the cleanest alternative to the stock nav in my opinion.
