Having a serious issue with Gas Guage!

Well I have had a problem with my gas guage reading low for about 3 months now. It would read about a quarter tank low which is to say that when my gas light came on, I still have about 5 gallons left in my tank. When I took it into South Bay infiniti for that problem recently, they tried to tell me that it is normal and the reserve tank for these cars are 5 gallons!!! This is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. I want to know if anyone has any documentation showing how much gas should be left in the tank when the light comes on. My car didn't used to be this way; I used to get about 350-400 miles till my light came on and now I only get about 200. All the while the technician is telling me that everything checks out and it is normal. I was not able to convince him with words that what he was telling me was insane, so I need some documentation. It is really annoying me now.

The gas gauge usually lights up when I have about 3 gallons left. I've had moments where it would turn on with about 4-5 gallons left, but the light would disappear within a few minutes.

The last last time I brought my car in, I told my service advisor that my fuel gauge wasn't reading correctly and he had the techs check it and they replaced the fuel monitoring system. Seems like your dealership is just being a jerk about it. Who knows. There is a TSB for it I believe. Not quite sure though.

The G uses 2 fuel level senders & averages the 2 for the signal sent to the guage. The failure is usually un the sub-sender(driver side).

It is a TSB. They just have to pop your rear seat to change out that sending unit. Take it to the dealer

Steve mine did the same thing. I took it to the dealer and they fixed it...AND gave me a free tank of gas so they could test it.

Take it to the dealer - its under warranty, and go when you have like quarter of a tank left!

I had a problem with my fuel tank also of not being able to fill up over 3/4 tank, which began happening at 12000miles, I took it in for TSB job under warrantee (to replace the shutter valve, see below link). When I got the car back, I was only able to fill up to 7/8 tank, and further realized that the fuel light only came on at the last small notch on the fuel meter.
I took it back in again, they replaced the whole fuel tank and it is working fine now (except that it is making a metal squeeking noise every time when I step on the gas from the out side back near the fuel tank (which is a whole another issue I am working to resolve with the dealership ).

I already gave it to the dealer twice for this issue and the second time i took it in when the light came on to let them see that I had a quarter tank left when it was on empty. They said they checked all the sending units and floats and said they all checked out fine. Thats when they told me that our cars have a QUARTER tank reserve!! Apparently they dont use common sense. And for those who thought 350 to 400 per tank is high, our cars average from 18mpg to 24mpg. So 20mpg x 20 gallons = 400 miles, and for you to get 250 miles per tank is around 12.5mpg. And I dont think your coupe has a lamborghini engine.

Your low fuel light is coming on a little early. It should come on with only 3 gallons left in the tank.
BTW, there is no "Reserve Tank", or separate tank. The low fuel light comes on when the fuel in the tank reaches 3 gallons or so to indicate a low fuel condition.

400 miles seams reasonable for 20 gallons, but don't forget you won't be able to burn all of those 20 gallons b4 refilling.
You probably won't wait much longer than when the low fuel light comes on, which would allow you to burn about 17 gallons.

Thats funny, I have the exact same problem with my car. I keep filling it up when the light is on and i can only put in 14 gal before it over flows.

unfortunatly my warranty is up but if its a TSB then they have to do it for free anyways right? Anyone have a link to the TSB #?

yeah tell your dealer to prove to you in the manual. There is NO quarter tank reserve. A few weeks back I had 370 miles on 1 tank (never use AC) and I ran out of gas due to my gas tank telling me that I had enough in there...(which is another story). I wish there was a quarter tank reserve! Woulda saved me an embarrasing walk to the gas station.

My suggestion is take it in there again, and have them show you where it says that there's quarter tank reserve. The light should come on with about 3 gallons left.

Whenever I fill up (gas pouring onto ground). The guage says between full and 3/4 tank.

Whenever i fill up compeletly ( auto shutoff on the pump ) the needle is ABOVE the full level on the gauge. Also my light comes on with about 3 gallons left in the tank.
