Former Vette owner looking for info
Hello to everyone. This is my first post on this forum. I sold my '01 Vette coupe last month and I am considering buying a used '05 G35 coupe 6MT within the next few months. I was one of those Vette owners who felt the car had to look perfect. Therefore, it was driven very little. I finally came to the realization that I was not wealthy enough to have that much money sitting in the garage doing nothing. I decided to sell it so I could get a daily driver.
My daily work commute is 80 miles round trip, most of it interstate. I've researched the gas mileage and tire wear of the G35, so I know what to expect in these areas. It would be nice to get some feedback from a current G35 6MT owner who has owned or driven a C5 Vette. I have no idea how a G35 6MT rides compared to the Vette, so any input in this area would be helpful. Also, I have no idea now quiet the G35 is inside. The Vette had a lot of road noise, primarily due to the tires and the fact that the cabin was not well insulated.
FYI, the Vette I sold had the base suspension. It was not a Z06 and it did not have the Z51 suspension.
I have not taken a test drive in a G35 yet. I've only sat in an '04 and '05. As all of you know, you can't evaluate a car on a short test drive. That's why I'm asking for your input.
Thanks in advance for any advice/input.

I've driven a C5 Vette quite a bit, although I've never owned one. The ride in my '05 G coupe is softer than the ride in a C5, and that's surprising considering the 19" wheels and the sports suspension that are standard on the '05 G coupe. Infiniti did a great job building a great handling car that provides a comfortable ride, and with an 80 mile roundtrip, that's an important consideration. Believe it or not but the gas mileage in your C5 will be much better than the G. You'll be lucky to get more than 20 - 21 MPG in a G coupe. Obviously, the biggest change for you will be power. The G doesn't have anywhere near the torque of your C5, and the G is much heavier.
Bottom line is that if you like a great looking car that handles well, and you don't need all of the power in a Vette, you'll be happy with the G.

I'm sure you'll get a lot of responses on this topic from this thread...but if you go to the forums button on the top and use the "search" function you can find a lot of threads on Vette's vs. G's, here's a couple...

GCTDS, I too was an owner of a 2001 vette. I had a 2001 Z06 as a daily driver and I loved it. At the time I had a 2 year old so when the family went out(wife son and myself) we always took our honda odyssey. So the only time I got to drive the vette was basicly to work and back, which is about 6 miles round trip. I ended up trading for a tahoe Z71. Enjoyed that for a couple of years but just got tierd of the big bulky thing and I was really wanting a sports car back in the family( one with at least 3 seats). I purchased a 05 6mt coupe on new years eve 05. The cabin noise is a little better on the G35, my G35 has the 19's so I'm sure the noise would be better in the cabin if it were equipped with the 18's. The ride of the 2 cars is just about the same, the only big difference is the horsepower and torque. But I really enjoy the G35 more because all 3 of us can fit in it. So unless chevy comes out with a 3 seat vette I'll keep the G. Go for the G, you'll love it!

Thanks to everyone for their replies...... a lot of good info, especially in the links.
Unfortunately I did my research on the G after I sold the Vette. At the time I sold it, I didn't realize gas mileage on the G was worse. The Vette would get 26 or better on the highway. At 70 mph in 6th it was only turning 1600 rpm.
One thing I found interesting in looking at the links was a brief discussion about insurance costs. Some seem to believe that insurance on a Vette is much higher. Full coverage on my Vette was $268.00 every 6 months. It was listed as a "pleasure" vehicle on my insurance policy. Also, there is an advantage to be an old married guy with a clean driving record.
I talked to my insurance agent last week and he quoted me a price of $370.00 every 6 months on the G35.
Thanks again for the info. There seem to be a lot of good people and good info on this forum.

I bought a new 1997 Vette and owned it for 4 years and 30,000 miles. The dealer had it for 27 official visits to repair problems and about 15 other visits when I would stop in to have things checked and/or repaired. I now have an 04 G35 Coupe. It is two years old with 15,000 miles and has yet to go back to the dealer. We drive it on cross country trips and love it. Quiet, fun, plenty of luggage space and fast enough. You will not regret your move to Infiniti.

I gave up my '04 Corvette convertible because I also wanted a back seat for my kids. I miss the raw power, drop top and all of the head turning that I used to get but I also love my G35 Coupe. It looks great, handles great, has a nice interior and has enough power to keep me happy. It makes a great daily driver.

My insurance went up when I went from the Z06 to the G35 also. Ins. dude says the median age for a vette owner is 32-50 yrs old. Where as the age for a typical G35 coupe owner is more like 23-35 years old. That puts the G in a higher ins. bracket. Kinda makes sense. But like AVJunkie says... "It looks great, handles great, has a nice interior and has enough power to keep me happy. It makes a great daily driver"
