Disgraced! smoked by TransAm

I am sorry to report I have failed the breed. Friday night and TranAm is pacing me . At stop I go to manual auto and at roll off we nail it and his V8 pulls car length on me, but as my revs pass 4 large, I gain on him,... smack to 2nd gear and drop half length, and never gain back through third and shut off. I need a stick! It was like horsepower versus American v8 torque. I have had corvettes, GTO's and 442's. I did not like this.
Send posse, need help.

Re: Disgraced! smoked by TransAm

I smoked a TransAm a couple of weeks ago. I have a stick and he..an auto. He kept up until I hit 4th and was winding up to 5-6K.

Better luck next time.

Well unless your car is modified and his Trans Am is an older model you shouldn't expect to win. In fact if it's a late model Trans Am it shouldn't have been that close especially up top. The G35C isn't that fast. It's got decent speed but compared to most muscle cars and import racers it's kind of slow. Not sure why everyone thinks it's a race car.

Yeah late model Trans Ams/Z28s driven by good drivers should have the advantage. WIthout FI, it's just not possible to run with an LS1.

Actualy after rereading my previous post, it was a V8 Firebird, not the TransAm Trim. The V8 (Formula) Firebird is 310hp.

Re: Disgraced! smoked by TransAm

These things are easily modified also. I remember on the old bmwm5.com forum, a guy posted an "aquaintance" beat him in his 400HP M5, because the guy had spent around $3k and did some fairly nice mods to his car.

The M5 is one of the fastest cars on the road, so people were constantly talking about never losing, but when it did comparing apples to apples - which could be no mods to no mods. Oranges to Oranges could be V8 vs. V8, etc. You could have been racing a modded Trans Am = comparing oranges to apples....

Re: Disgraced! smoked by TransAm

I have a modded 2000 formula (that will be sold off when the g35c comes in) and it's identicle (ls1 engine) to the trans am...the trans am just has more plastic bolted onto it.
On this car minor intake and exhast mods make crazy power. I ordered the car with the performance rear axle so that helped also. My car has way more power than I'll ever need, that's why I don't mind giving up some 0-60 speed for a more refined car.

Every day I will enjoy the comfort and advanced features of the g while I very rarely used all the power of the formula....it's just not nessary to have that much power for everyday use.
For me switching to a g is all about forgetting my days of dangerous street racing...if someone is not feeling that way I don't see why they didn't buy a z or better yet a cobra...

Re: Disgraced! smoked by TransAm

I love this car with a burning passion..........it is my life....but like you said........this car really isn't that "fast". It's quick.........never expect to "smoke" a late model trans-am, camaro SS, Cobra..etc..............but damn, I wish we could.

Re: Disgraced! smoked by TransAm

you know I don't understand a lot of people . . .why do you care so much about "smokin'" someone at a light with the G? Although the car is pretty fast (can keep up with most V8 German cars (not M or AMG)), its attributes are more than just straight line speed . . .

Get that Firebird on a twisting road, and you would eat him for lunch . . . .provided that you know what you're doing . . .

The G is a driver's car . . its a sports car, not a muscle car . . .so let the camaro guys worry about the 1/4 mile . . .The G is about the total driving experience . . .

That's why the car has received such good press

Yeah at the end of the day, the musclecars have one thing and one thing only - straight-line speed. It's nice for drag races but take that away and they have nothing else for the 20-25 grand spent.

Actually, its best to shift gears before the 6k RPM mark. If you look at dynos, after the 6k mark, we actually lose power. In any case, best luck with your next run-in with an American muscle car.

Re: Disgraced! smoked by TransAm

I think I feel better about the "shut down". I don"t make a practice of street racing....but I wanted to see how it ran next to my old American V8 muscle. (and I still have a few traces of mind-numbing testosterone). It is pretty much what my Butt Dyno told me might happen. I could not get into my power range until 4 grand and than I went ballistic and was gaining on him, but the G spins up so quickly , you have to go to next gear --while his torque and wide ratio's allow him to catch back his lead. If I could rev up at launch and get immediately into my power band, I think I could have stayed with or ahead of him I was gaining everytime I hit upper rpms...If this went on for long enough, I think I could pass him. Yep, newer TranAm and the road was deserted and clear.
Thanks for the thoughts
Still send that posse,
especially 6mt.

Dude, It sounds like you acquitted yourself quite well. Pretty hard to beat displacement especially down low like you said. Only way to equalize that deficit is FI.
You did well bro, and are an inspiration for us 'mature' G's.

Re: Disgraced! smoked by TransAm

ditto to what GSM said but also i have to agree if u want to get best acceleration u will have to leave it in auto mode "drive." i used to think i would be able to get better time in the manual mode but i took it to the track and every time drive beat my auto shifts. Good luck in the future though
