I think what Jonnylaw is saying is that any "enthusiast" driving an auto isn't really an enthusiast at all. Regardless of how fast the car is. Auto trannies say more about the driver than the car.

I sense that because you drive a manual, you feel that your a better driver than those with autos. I've had two modded twin turbo Zs with manuals and I loved them, and I still drive a manual in my Pathfinder. I chose to get an auto in this car because I drive on the 405 and in Los Angeles streets in stop and go traffic quite frequently and need my hands free to make phone calls, and I don't like the way my left leg feels after an hour of this kind of driving with a manual. Also, I would like my wife to be able to drive this car occasionally if I've been drinking and I don't want to be behind the wheel. I don't 'race' with this car and would make no attempt to on public streets as this puts others at risk as well as myself. But occasionally, I like to hit a windy road and this is where the manu-matic thing comes into play. If this makes me less of an 'enthusiast' or gives me less street cred then I guess I should just buy a prius by that measurement...

^ Nicely stated. Manual mode in the 5AT gives you the ability to hold gears thru turns. That alone makes it better than plain ole "D". Not to mention our manual mode holds gears much better than similar trannys by other manufacturer. 6mt's are probably fun, but it does not define the driver.

I consider my self an enthusiast. What else matters? Jonnylaw & his "street cred"? Hahahaha I think not.

Who gives a ****.

Remember: 99% of the people you think your impressing while you drive around don't care about you or me.

True dat - but there are always those who think you are based on what you drive/own/wear whatever and treat you accordingly - I get it all the time because I just wear jeans and sweatshirts to work that I don't have anything going on...

Thank you for restating what I was getting at. I don't care what others think of me. But, sorry I associate "racing" in a G35 w/ a m/t, that's all.

4 you auto drivers that claim to be enthusiasts, it's great that you feels so passionately about smashing down on a pedal on the floor. Most manual drivers are just as good if not better than most of all auto drivers. But it's certainly not the same the other way around. Great you can "stay in a gear while going through a turn" and that makes you an enthusiast? Please. If you are really into driving, and you have a choice b/w a an auto and a manual on the same car, u take the manual. That's the only real way to be connected w/ the car. I really don't care if u agree w/ me or not.

I maybe wrong. But didn't a magazine just recently did a comparsion between an auto g35x and a manual g35, and the auto g35x performed better in autocross than the manual?

and like others have said, unless u r a great manual driver( many thinks they are great when they are really not), u would be slower than a good manualmatic like the g35 has and holding ur shifting till last sec?

I'm in agreement about the controlling the car, it's the immediate assumption that you aren't an enthusiast(or good driver) if you bought this car in an automatic. People have practical reasons for doing things. If I really wanted a performance car to 'race' I wouldn't have bought a G with back seats, I would have bought a Vette and not a car that barely has more horsepower than some minivans on the market today-

Wow. u r so hard to talk tough on the internet. And this is a PUBLIC message board--If nobody cared what I thought, then how come people responded to my comments, including you stupid?
And ur opinion may be shared w/ other auto members on this board, but I'm pretty sure many would also agree w/ me that one's personal choice of transmission (w/ a sports coupe that offers a 5 speed auto on one hand and a 6 speed manual on the other hand) has MUCH to do w/ being a car enthusiast or not.

It's about passion & the sheer love to drive, period. A 6mt is fun to drive. Shoot...if the X was offered w/ 6mt I would have gone that route.

So, b/c I chose the AWD w/ 5AT I can no longer call my self an enthusiast?
If your next car, or two cars from now is an auto, do you stop being an enthusiast?

The issue is you telling others who or what they are. It's very pompas. I've read more than a couple threads where you're all high & mighty about 6mt vs 5at. You have been of no use to any of those threads' original topics/questions.
