2006 G35 Coupe 6MT: Initial Impressions
#19
I just picked up my 2006 6MT Coupe a few hours ago and my here are some of my initial impressions. The power and torque just doesn't feel like it is where the car is rated at. I haven't pushed it yet, but maybe it's because the V-6 spins so freely that it doesn't feel like it's as powerful as Infiniti claims. Hopefully that will change once the car is broken in. The brakes are good, the tranny is silky smooth, and the clutch feels like butter. I'll easily be able to drive the car during my daily commute of 2.5 miles (stop and go traffic) without any fatigue during those 15 minutes. The ride is firm and enjoyable and the handling feels good. There doesn't seem to be much body roll and the car absorbs undulations in the road quite well.
Now to part where I'm a bit let down.
I traded in my '05 Acura TL 5AT for the G6MT Coupe, and the quality of the interior is much better in the Acura. I was very surprised at how flimsy most of the plastics are with the G35. I hardwired my V1 and while I was hiding the wires I couldn't get over how thin and malleable the plastics are. For a mid 30K car, I would have thought that the plastics would have been a little more substantial, but that's not a deal killer for me. I like the layout and the controls are nicely placed and that's more important to me. I didn't realize how small the interior was, although I spent a lot of time previously test driving the car. A dealer gave me one for a few hours to cruise around in and it was Wheat interior, whereas I have Graphite and obviously the darker interior makes it feel smaller. My NSX actually feels like it has more interior room, but that's also because of its F-16 derived cockpit design and low slung dash with a great view of the road.
I hope no one takes this as a bashing of the car. I carefully pick the cars that I purchase (25 in the past 15 years) and I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't such a great car. I'm looking forward to enjoying the camaraderie of this forum and hopefully meeting some great people at gtg's.
Cheers

Gee Wiz... I guess it is all relative.. The make of the interior, I can't comment on as this is the most luxurious ride I have owned (and I haven't taken it apart yet). I can tell you that in just 600 miles the engine has loosened up quite a bit, since I drove it off the lot with 8 miles. I assume it continues to loosen up the more it gets broken in.
Congrats on your new ride also... and I hope that can fall in love with your G as much as most of us have. If not... 25 cars in 15 years... is sounds like you have no problems trading em in to try something new
Keep us posted on the progression as you drive the car more.
