My friend and I are going around and around on this one.

He says the basic warranty covers everything because there is no such thing as a failure that is not a manufactuer's defect or installation problem and wear and tear will never be covered anyway because the dealer will always find a way to blame the driver.

I say you need the extended warranty to cover wear and tear so the dealer cannot say that it's not covered because the part wore out due to wear and tear, which they are likely to try and say to get out of the repair.

Basically, my dealer told me that with the basic warranty there may be repairs that I must pay for, but with the extended warranty I can just drive in and say "fix it" and it will always be covered and I pay nothing. I think they're feeding me a line of horse poop. Luckily I have some time to decide since my car is on order.

Me and my family have had some bad experiences with these "extended warranties". From what we were told they would cover everything "bumper-to-bumper". Well, when problems started coming up, we were told they were not covered under the warranty and we would have to pay for the repairs. So pretty much we were paying extra for the warranty for nothing. This is just my personal experience, but I would stay away from those extended warranties.

 

basic warranties do not cover wear and tear, tires, brakes, wiper blades, etc...

usually, extended, unless written differently is the same.

read the fine print.

my hesitantcy with getting the extended (i get my car this week) would be is that the G will be my second or nice weather car. so the 4 yrs will come first, i won't go over the miles. at 7 yrs, i might just be hitting the 50 or 60, at which point the car shoudld still be fine.

 

I think the usual infiniti extended warranty is exclusionary, meaning they specifically line out what is NOT covered. But those include wear and tear items like clutches, brake pads, wipers, etc.

So basically, yeah your dealer was feeding you a line of bs.

 

The basic warranty is bumper-to-bumper for defects, and covers you for X miles. The extended warranty doesn't add anything before you reach X miles, it simply covers parts from X thru Y miles. Not many extended warranties are bumper-to-bumper. They do cover the drivetrain and major components, but it's the stuff they don't cover that's generally prone to breaking.

If you're leasing your car, or selling it before the basic warranty is out, then you definately don't need the extended warranty.

If you are keeping the car, there are two options. 1) Get the extended warranty through the dealership -- generally less hassle to get things repaird, but less coverage. 2) Get a bumper-to-bumper aftermarket warranty -- better coverage, but more of a pain to get reimbursed, and there's always the danger of the warranty company going out of business.

Good advice on the other posts. Just to add, I got a copy of the extended warranty and it lists each item it covers(over 2800) and a reference no. The cost for the max protection of 7 years/100K is 1800.00 with the price dropping with the amount of your deductible and smaller coverage/mileage.

Compare this to other warranty companies and take your time. Ask questions and get answers in writing. It is a fact that most cars start to break after the basic warranty expires. So if you are not a do it yourselfer it is worth the consideration. One other note, Infiniti's extender must be done by 6,000 miles or in 6 months to be considered a new car. I don't know if it is whatever comes first, but I'll find out.
