You will get used to it. I don't mind the shifting but it's not my first choice transmission. After driving my dads BoxterS the shifting on my car seems impossible. The Porsche seems sooo smooth.

6500 miles here, all gears are less notchy, exception of 5th gear, its still just as notchy as the day i got it. I am not complaining though. Shifting if very smooth and easy now. Driving our Z3 is a chore now... haha
In order to smoothly shift into 1st gear while rolling, you need to be going VERY VERY slowly, such as at a stop sign, i'd say between 2-3 mph. Any more than that then you should just shift to 2nd gear.
