anyone else not like the manual trans/shifter?

I've only got about 800 miles on my 6MT so far but I've noticed a couple things I don't like about the transmission and shifter:

1) At a standstill, right after you push in the clutch it's hard to shift into first. If you've had the clutch depressed for a while it's easy to shift into first.

2) 5th is sometimes hard or sticky to shift into.

I think in general if I'm shifting fast it gets harder to change gears, and I have to use more effort to shove the stick into place. Maybe I just don't have the right technique, but I'm not grinding gears so I've got the clutch depressed enough. And I'm not doing any double clutching, but I'm talking about shifting up here as well.

Anybody else notice these things or is it just me?

Overall I still love to drive it, it's just small annoyances really.

I have the issue as well...trying to shift into 1st while moving slowly. It doesnt grind but the car does not seem to like it. On the whole, I think the shift feel/quality is not bad, but I like the feel of my S2000 better.

I think that, because it is a short throw shifter, that it requires more effort to shift than if it were a long throw shifter. On a fast start it takes a bit of muscle to throw it into second or you could miss the gear and get some grinding.

Personally, I love the shifter in my coupe because I am in charge of when the gears shift, not some electronic computer.

Seem like my decision on getting the 5AT is right... I was considering the 6MT was all because of the BREMBO brakes which attracted me in some ways...just too sexy looking...performance wise... And I've never owned a stick car so I might have a hard time getting used to it... Again...can't wait for my coupe...which should be coming in this week...c'mon!!!

i pick up my 6mtc sat or tuesday. am looking forward to it. all cars take some getting used to.

i have a saturn and mazda pickup, both MT's. saturn is short throw, truck, well, has the long stick.

it is much easier to with a short throw

I don't like my tranny when it's cold. It's stiff and requires more effort to shift. Once it warms up, it shifts buttery smooth and is very satisfying to drive.

If you like manuals and don't have an ungodly commute, this is a good one.

Yeah I love the stick on this car - very short precise throws but as people say, it has a tendency to get sticky at times. Wonder if there are any fixes for this type of thing, like maybe changing transmission oil?

Re: anyone else not like the manual trans/shifter?

I have about 1350 miles as of today on my 6MT coupe (built in May). At 1200 miles I changed the tranny fluid to Royal Purple Max Gear. Before the fluid change, the shifting action was firm but accurate and I have yet to stall the car with the clutch. I think the clutch is perfect. After 1200 miles (with the RP) the shifting is still stiff when the car is cold, but after half a mile, the shifting is so easy I can make all shifts, except 1-2, with two fingers and minimal effort. Not a bit stiff or notchy. The 1-2 shift is still about the same as before the RP, stiff, but accurate.

Anyone else car to comment on how tranny fluid changes have effected shifting action?

No problems here either. I've never owned an automatic, only manuals. From three on the column to six on the floor. The Infiniti transmission is one of the best I have had.

Most manual transmissions are a little stiff when new. The problem usually goes away once you get a few thousand miles on the car. At 50K miles, my Maxima's MT was still hard to get into 1st gear on cold mornings.

Synchro-mesh. On all but first gear, like all (or nearly all, manual transmissions). As such, few cars can be shifted into first cleanly while rolling. Nor should they be. With the power you have on tap, launches in third aren't really a problem, so no need to go to first until you're actually stopped. And "gumminess" when the gearbox is cold on chilly mormings is exacerbated by Nissans desire to keep your tranny healthy under hot and demanding conditions (lots of oil to heat up with lots of tranny cooling being done as you drive). The gearbox is robust- I'll be curious to see what it's like with 25K miles on it.
