Cigarette Lighter Socket

I plugged in my portable navigation device into my lighter power socket and it started to smoke, which blew the fuse inside the nav power adapter. The lighter socket looked OK so I tested it with the cigarette lighter. Big mistake, it would not push in and hold so I held it in. In started smoking badly. When I removed the lighter I noticed, beside the smell, a black substance inside the power socket, and of course the lighter had crap on the element.

I vaguely remember something got inside the socket last year but I thought I got all of it out at that time. Obvoiusly there was something still inside. I had not used it again until now.

Should I try to clean it which a non metal object then try again? Any suggestions?
