6Speed Manual in winter??

Hey guys, for all the G35 winter drivers out there, how does the manual handle in the winter? what kinder winter tires do you guys suggest? do you guys even drive the stick G35 in winter or is automatic better?

It doesnt snow too much in Oklahoma so theres no need for winter tires but we do get our fair share of cold temperatures. The 6MT really does not like the cold then again no transmission really does. It feels kind of clanky until the car warms up and even then it doesnt feel the same as it does in normal cruising temperatures. I have no idea on how the automatic functions in the winter.

MT does well in slippery surfaces, but at the same time, the tranny gets
pretty stubborn in the cold.

i don't drive my G in the snow. she just hibernates next to my cooper-s.
i have a 06 legacy wagon for the snow, and a 06 civic ex sedan for the
commute.

We didn't get as much snow this year as last in New England but we had our bad snow storms... Honestly..

The car has no issues as far as handling in the snow... I haven't lost control ONCE driving faster than alot of FWD cars in the snow.. ofcourse I had snow tires Blizzak WS-50.

Here's the problems:

I got stuck after forcing myself onto a side parking, I got out rocking the car back and forth 1st and R. I didn't even turn off VDC to get myself out either. The process did take a little while.

If I'm not already moving the car will not move up a steep hill... more associated with a driveway rather than regular city driving.

I was really scared of having a G35 as my only car for the winter but the snow tires did the trick and I had no major issues driving it in the winter.

Winter Sport M3's on 18" OEM in Chi w/ no problems (but then again, I have not dared to drive over 2 inches)--The only trick w/ the 6mt is to go slow and shift often since the 1st 2 gears pull pretty hard. Oh, dont forget to leave the VDC on in the winter

The 6mt gives you better control over the car in the winter ... I have driven both 5at and 6mt through the winter, 6mt is safer no doubt. Unless if you dont know how to drive stick which could then become dangerous. As far as tires, Dunlop M3s .... I have been using blizzak w55 i think, got 3 winters out of them ... will swith to the dunlop m3s as they provide much more sport feel/traction in the dry than the blizzacs while only sacrificing a little snow/ice traction.

I was able to get thru chicagos winter last year with no problems. even wti some all seasons on the car. With some winter tires I would have no problems using the 6MT to get to the slopes for some snowboarding.

One of the best 'winter / sport' tires out there are the Dunlop Wintersport M3. I will make that the next set of winters I have after my Nokian WR have worn out. (I don't think Nokian makes 18s that fit a G otherwise I would go with them first ... Finnish people know winter tires.)

If you're new to manual transmission than winter might be a little harder for you. If you're good, than it doesn't matter. I have my 6MT '04 as my olny car, and had no problems, because I have put snow tires on. I had blizzaks on my rears, and the car felt very stable and controlable.

I also have 18" blizzaks on my coupe.
Living in Canada here, I see a few months of winter every year. I have not had a problem getting around after the blizzaks go on. (Never been stuck once)
I stress that winter tires are a must if you are driving in the snow though.
The only trouble i can see the 6MT giving you is if you are a beginner, but if you know how to drive stick i dont think you will have any problems.

All tire manufacturers recommended buying a set of 4 snow tires, not just a pair (ie front tires for FWD; rear tires for RWD).

Yes I had snow tires on all 4 wheels, just the fronts were Hankook. I know they might not be the best, but I bought the whole set with OEM 18s together, and they served their pupose very well. I just mentioned blizzaks cause I know they are very good.

I ran Blizzak LM-22's on the OEM 18" during two snow storms without any problem. They handle quite well in snow. Ice is another issue but then again no car handles well in ice no matter what tires you are running. My friend left his factory 19" summer tires on and got stuck in less than an inch of snow. What ever you decide to do, DO NOT TURN OFF THE VDC.

I live in Ontario Canada and I run my G Sedan all year round. I just run all seasons.. If you keep a light foot, you would be fine.. No worse then any two wheel drive truck I have had. I always start with VDC OFF or you will never get moving then turn it back on.. No worries in the snow for me.
