Rear end whine?

So ive been getting this whine/howl that I think is coming from the rear end on my 06 6mt coupe. it only does this when the vehicle is cold and gets very prominent around 45-55 mph. Been to the dealership and they have no idea what it may be. To me it sounds like "gear" noise. The car does this in gear and in neutral. Ive searched around and have only found similar issues Frontiers and Titans. Anybody familiar with this?

Thanks in advance

Could be a wheel bearing. Also it wouldnt hurt to check the fluid level in your diff.

I asked the dealership they said there was no reason to check since there was no evidence of the leak. they dont seem to eager to diagnose it so I may have to take it to someone else

Whose to say that it was filled up to the proper level at the factory?

The differential would be the last place to check anyways, it sound like it could be a wheel bearing issue.

does it go away after some driving? i experience similar issues when the temps are in the 20s and the car has sat overnight. it sounds like a tea kettle with a whistle. it goes away after a few minutes of driving. it was really bad with the RP i had in the rear diff. i switched to castrol hypoyC 80w-90 and it's cut down considerably. it still happens only when the temps are super low.

i've had wheel bearings go in my old maxima and my sis' impreza 2.5RS. those noises sound more like a constant humming with pitch rising with speed. the noises i hear from the rear are different and actually go away with driving. still not sure if it's the diff or connecting driveline. it seems like i'm not the only one with this type of problem. my warranty is up this september so i have to see if it goes away with the season change.

great; cmon over to that thread and sub and post your experience. I'm hoping to get my car up on stands this weekend to figure out what end of the car its coming from and whether the car has to be moving to make the noise. just so long as it stays above freezing by the time i get to it

Rear Whine

I had a rear end whine and was almost sure it was my rear differential, but after changing the rear diff. oil the whine was still there. It actually was a rear left hub and bearing essembly, replaced at the dealer. No more whine.
I have a 2004 G35 Coupe with 90K miles.
