Why 298hp...why not 300?

Thanks Jeff....I was about to say the same thing. It's 298 because that's what it's tuned to. Pontiac GTO has 400 HP (and not 398
) probably because that's what it truly has.

My guess would be that they wanted the 07's to offer nearly the same margin in hp as the 298 hp have from the 280hp engines

where k is a value between 0 and 1 (inclusive)
let c = 745.7 * k * volts (which is constant)
that implies
horsepower ~= c * amps or
horsepower rating is directly proportional to ampere rating
Basically a measure of the same thing.
