I dunno if this has been asked but I have seen this on many awd cars like the Audi TT quattro. Why do awd cars like have vdc on them isnt that what awd is suppose to be doing? Like if the car slips woudn't awd do the same thing as vdc? So my question is what is the point of vdc on a awd car?

 

AWD transfers power away from wheels losing traction to the wheels with traction. VDC uses the brakes and reduction of engine power to help improve traction. AWD should reduce the need for VDC on acceleration, but doesn't substitute for VDC when you've gone into a corner too quickly and g-forces are overwelming the tires and suspension; using the brakes on individual wheels and reducing power, brings the car back under control.

 

VDC encompases two systems.. traction control and stability control. You're right that traction control is needed less with AWD.. the system shifts power to the other wheels. The traction control system can still help, however, by reducing engine power and/or braking the slipping wheels. So, the two systems have the same goal, but go about it in different, complementary ways. Stability control is a different beast, as it's purpose is not to help with traction, but rather to regain control of a vehicle that's starting to skid or fishtail out-of-control. While it's harder to get into such situations with AWD compared to RWD, it's still good to have the computer correct for skids and fishtails and such for the average driver.
