it was around 2am.. my friend and i were bored and we were just talking about cars. he starts off by saying that the G and his max would be a good race. so we went off in a very remote part of the town to make a quick run. the maxima having 255hp i thought it would be interesting.
btw.. specs...
my car
G35S AT with injen CAI and grounding kit
my friend's
02 maxima SE stock
so.. we line up.. the light turns greeen and we are off. but as i have predicted his FWD had a hard time putting the power down to the ground as i hear his tires screaching to grab hold of the road. at around 60mph i am about 3 car lengths ahead.
2nd race was from 30mph roll.
i thought the race would be close, but i slowly pulled away from him.
all in all it was a great race~

Nice, Culmination.
Just curious, what road did you guys drag on? I live in Diamond Bar now, but grew up around the Hacienda/Rowland area.

Nice race but I really dont like hearing about VQ3.5 cars vs. VQ3.5 cars. It pontless to race a car with the same engine.
Registered User
Did the 02 Maxima have the VQ3.5? I thought it didn't change until 2003.

Culmination, you made a good point here. Although the Maxima has the same great VQ35 as ours, (also same powertrain?), anyway my point is no matter how much HP you have, it wont benefit when you have FWD. Now I am rethinking about that 2004 TL, I would love to see what the new G35 will come out with. =)

it changed to a 3.5 in 2002 and the drivetrain is different, only a 4spd auto instead of 5. So the gears are very tall.
Also the g35 has better flowing exhaust bends and a bigger intake manifold and throttle body...

there is about 12hp diff at the engine eventho it says there is 255 at the engine nissan overstated the hp but understated the tq same goes with some G's. But at the wheel there both cars are making about the same hp since the Max's is a fwd car.

Its several post about this if the Max 02/03 gets a good launch it can take a G slightly on the 1/4 ask Bossho he has both. His Max is slightly quicker in the 1/4 than his G35 auto. I have ran one before adn he got me up to 55, the key to the Max is the launche if you know how to launch without burning up the tires it will be a good run for an auto G35, auto to auto that is.

Well, I finally ran some respectful times, and all it took was a 30 degree drop in temps to do it...lol. I went to NE Dragway last night and it was 51-53 F out all night and perfect for racing.
As some of you knew, and cared about, I was trying to get close to my Wife's Car which I was able to rip off 14.6's and one low 14.5 (almost a 14.4 and it was 85+ F out that day),and I finally did it last night.
I ran 5 times, won five times and ran a best time of 14.66 at 94+. This was done with the car in 4, VDC off, and a launch at idle.
My runs were as follows:
2.272 60' - 14.66 @ 94.33 (in 4, beat a Formula Firebird)
2.288 60' - 14.74 @ 95.68 (Manual shifted, beat a 4.6 Mustang GT)
2.313 60' - 14.79 @ 94.13 (in 4, beat a Riced up V6 Accord)
2.315 60' - 14.78 @ 94.05 (in 4, beat a Durango RT 5.9)
2.252 60' - 14.66 @ 94.28 (in 4, beat a riced up Focus SVT)
I started the night with 40 psi up front and 35 out back...when I noticed my 60' times going the wrong way, I set the rears back to 35 psi, and tadah...another 14.66...I had promised the wife I would be home for 9 for a later dinner so I took off after the 5 runs...maybe, just maybe, if I had gone down to 34 psi out back...I would have hit the 14.5 zone...
Conclusion...My wife's 02 Maxima SE is faster in the 1/4 Period. I pulled all 2.1 60' times and her car never looks back. All of my trap speeds are slower than her car unless I manually shift the G35 which nets speeds of almost 96 mph, but with sh*t 60' and 1/4 mi times...so I will settle for the lower mph and getting there a tenth faster.
I tried using my toggle switch to disable the brake lights and VDC/TCS completely, but with the sticky track surface I couldn't even get the rear wheels to break loose giving me that much sought after hard launch the 5ATs just won't do, so if this car could launch like a 6 spd it would run with a 6 spd the whole way...but it can't so that's that. My wife takes sollace in knowing her car is at least faster for the first 1320', but we both know that after that it's bubye Maxima! lol

I forgot to mention that they do weigh a couple hundred po unds less than the G auto so that makes up for the 4spd vs 5spd auto deal up to certain speeds especially down low.

lol, until I got to your post Monte, I was wondering if someone would point out what you did.
If you go to any track around, the 02-03 SE Maximas in both Auto and 6 spd are running faster than the G's through the 1/4 mi...and then the G pulls away.
If the Maxima has TCS it's pretty easy not to ignite the tires, on ours we don't have it and I need to feather it on the street, but on the track it hooks right up nice every time with a little wheel spin...if only these damn G's did that...we could run 2.0-2.1 60' times and hit 14.3-14.4 in the Auto G's...

Sorry but can u clear up by what u mean on what our cars should have done to get better 1/4 times? Also I think we have tcs but it works with the vdc system.

No prob deadmanincbh,
The Maxima with out TCS, like ours, allows for wheel spin and a feathering of the gas off the line so that the engine stays all powered up, but the tires don't go up in smoke. If the poster's buddy had not ignited his tires from the start in their first race the Maxima should have taken the G for the first 1/4 Mi at least.
If our G's would allow for moderate wheel spin with the VDC off, and they really don't b/c the TCS is still somehow on, we could launch a lot harder in our 5AT Gs and by getting a harder launch we could run the 1/4 mi in the low 14's in the high 90's for mph.

i still can not believe the Maxima would win even the tires didnt spin because as i have said, my second race was from 30mph roll... i was pulling away from him. could it be due to my upgrade with injen and the grounding kit? hmmm...

Well its true I ran one from a stop and he got me up to 65 or so them we ran pretty even for a while and we shut it down, yes your injen makes a difference. Like I said and Bossho if you can hook up a 02/03 Max auto they sure as heck can run with or pull a G35 auto for while. If you ran him from 30 and his car didnt shift into 2nd gear you might pull a little but if that 02/03 max would have it would have been righ their with ya our advantage really only comes into play at high highway speeds over the 02/03 Max auto.

Oh ok thank you for clearing it up. I wish there was a tcs switch where we can turn that off in our cars.
