aftermarket exhaust vs custom exhaust shop exhaust

is it really worth all the extra money to get an aftermarket exhaust from hks or whatever when i can go to a muffler shop and have them build me a full exhaust for less than 400 bucks with stainless piping?

(limited experience) feel free to flame me.

my vote goes to paying the $$ for an after market kit. Supposidly those kits
injen,HKS, etc to name a few are tested for specific gains. if you go with a custom slapped together its a crap shoot, and quite frankly you may loose power.

additionaly I had the understanding the 304 SS used in the aftermarket exhaust requires a special welder. Usually this welder isnt at a muffler shop. and the skill required to perform the job non-existant.

just my 2 sense

Go with one from HKS,STILLIN,ECT.ECT they have a lot of R&D into them so your guaranteed to get gains. just my 0.02

go custom.....as long as you have a really good shop to do it!

I'm not buying into the R&D factor from HKS, etc. It is a muffler that is more or less straight through and bent piping. I bet the only R&D they do if trying to get a nice "tone."

personally, I don't think there is any power to be gained with an aftermarket exhaust on a relatively stock G35. Check alot of the exhaust posts.

I found the biggest exhaust gain to be from test pipes.....but I love my custom exhaust, too!

IMO, only worth it if it's a mandrel bent, not a crush bent... But the advantage to exhausts like the HKS are the beautiful welds.

I had a custom system built for my Dodge Ram. Every time I drive it, I hear folks wondering whose truck that old phart stole! Sounds great, but a little loud (Flowmaster 50s). Cheaper than a store-bought system, and a good shop will make a good system. Not talking about Bubba down at the Exxon station!

50's aren't that loud, 30's and 40's are loud, i had some 30's on my 98' Toyota Landcruiser with a 4.7 Liter V8(four cars back), and it was louder than my friends 02' Mustang GT with Mac mufflers and a off road x-pipe(no cats), it was ridiculous loud

There is no way you are going to get a good quality stainless exhaust from Joe's muffler for $400. Back in the day when Stillen first released demo photos for their gen1 dual, I took the pix to 3 local shops to see what they would charge to copy it. 2 of them said they couldn't do it because they didnt have the $50000 mandrel bending machine, and the one that did wanted $1200 for a full stainless catback. Needless to say I got the Stillen for $959 and still have it 3 years later. By all means, go aftermarket as they have done the testing and you get the benefit of volume/group buys etc. BTW, the fast intentions sedan setup sounds promising.

I have a custom catback on my car. And let me tell u, it sounds meaner than any other sedan exhaust on the market with less drone than any other aftermarket exhaust and the car does pull a bit harder than before. Most people have aftermarket exhausts on their car thats why they can not comment on a costum one. They just "assume" that because its not after market it is crap. Not true!
BTW my costum exhaust is not dual.

HERE are some sound clips from my car.

+1......aftermarket are expensive because the manufacturer spends time tuning them.
Worth the extra $$$$$.
