You heard them all before, but today story is a little different.

Today I had a brief enounter with an M3, mind you knowing that I would lose. but for the hell of it I tried. (FYI I have an '05 auto sedan)

So from a rolling start from 15mph to 60 mph he obviously pulled away, but I could tell he had an SMG(my friend had an M3, its hard to explain but you can hear the components of the smg working when shifted) which made this horrible crunchy grinding sound and visually the car stalled for a split second then lunge forward. If you ask me it was quite entertaining that $65k car had quirky dynamics of yugo.

Quick Question.

• Is SMG overhyped and overpiced or is it piece of superb automotive technology?

I ask this question because I never hear anything great from current and previous SMG owners. Also when reading other car websites, all have the same opinion of they rather take the MT over SMG.

 

The SMG was a great concept that BMW didn't get right till the new M5 and
M6. I have a 3 series and I lost the transmission at 65k because it is a steptronic. BMW didn't put much time in the RD for these types of transmissions.

 

I have heard they had a lot of problems with the SMG until 03 or 04.

 

any 6mt sedan raced 03-05 m3? I dont think they are that fast. Bolt-on Z smokes it all day.

ive run with a few m3s. they arent much faster than our cars at all. i saw a post a few weeks ago about somone saying the samething so im not the only one that keepin up with them. now somones gonna come on here with magazine 1/4 mile times and 0-60 times but it dosent matter. on more than 2 occasions from between 30-50mph till whenever we decided to stop (that mph shall go unmentioned) i was hanging with m3s.

 

Whats your problem bro? M3's are not that fast; my freind Hammad with i/pulley/headers/no cats, smokes them all day. He raced quite a few and they are all on video. If you dont beleive me go to my350z.com and search. I just wanted to know how the 6mt sedan's did aganist the m3. So don't talk bro.

LOL i dont know bout you guys stating that M3's arent that fast, but everytime ive taken on one, ive gotten my a** handed to me, and i am talking about being beat by 2 cars or so.....

 

yup....and at 100+ mph the gap got bigger and bigger and bigger....hehehee

 

In the e46 3-series, the steptronic trans was manufactured by *General Motors*. No, I am not joking.

 

naw bro, M3 is not a car that everyone can drive. I myself smoked two of them before racing my friend, its not even funny how many cls he leaves me. SMG convert would be different case, but coupe 6MT is fast if driven properly.

 

What mods do you have, I raced my brothers 6 speed and he beat me by 1 and 1/4 cars lengths. He turn it on sport mod which is why he was ahead. I own a BMW they aren't that great. With basic bolt on you will beat or hang with a M3. No matter who drives as long as you can drive. Put my mods on and a plentum and you will be right next to a M3 sports mode or not.

 

I love M3's, the only thing i can't stand is how they sound, they rasp like SH**, they sound like the motor is gonna blow, besides that, they are awsome

 

Ur brother doesn't know how to drive a M3, As i said earlier I have beaten 2 of them, that means i have beaten the drivers not the car. The car is clearly faster than fully bolt on G35. The only car that can hang with it is fully bolt on basic (32xx lb) Z 6mt. PERIOD!
