I just got a 2006 6MT sedan last week and I am going to detail it this weekend. I've been doing a lot of research on car detailing and am finding out that there is a dozen different types of wheels (chrome, mag, clear coat, aluminum, etc) and each one has its own cleaning product. And the problem is that certain products for one kind of wheel could totally shred another kind of wheel.

My question is, what kind of wheels are on the 2006 sedans (I have 18" wheels by the way) and what is the best product for cleaning them. I should also clarify that I'm looking for the best product that is readily available at most auto parts stores. In my research I see people recommending brands like Sonus and others that I've never heard of or seen before. Most stores near me carry brands liek Mothers, Turtle Wax, Armor All, Maguiars, Eagle one, etc.

Also, I have heard mixed reviews on the Mother's Ball. I have one that I used on my old car, will it work on the G?

I think the stock wheels are painted. As with any wheel, car soap and water is the easiest/safest/effective method. If you get aftermarket wheels that have bare aluminum lips (not to be confused with clear-coated, chrome or anodized lips), you would want to use an aluminum polish from time to time.

Use wheel cleaner is a last resort, 95% of the time you wont ever need it if you wash your wheels once a week.

 

Simple Green ($1.99 at any auto parts store) Spray it on and rinse it off - 90% of the brake dust and road grime will be gone. Finish up by using soap and water.

simple green is some strong stuff. even the automotive formula can decolor certain paints.

The g35 sedan 18 wheels are painted hypersilver (same as coupe 18, and 19s). They look dark or silver depending on what angle light reflects off them. They are extremely hard to colormatch, and the paint they use to paint it is expensive up the wazoo.

Use soap and water, and rinse often!

 

Sport wheels are painted. I've had no problem with brake dust or junk with soap and water. I imagine if you didn't clean your car for many months, junk might build up but I don't do that.

 

i go to walmart and buy super clean from castrol its strong but you can dilute it first, and put it in a spray bottle. i wet the rim with the hose then spray it on the rim to help break down the brake dust and then use a wet sponge with soap on it and wipe it down and scrub the tires with a hard brush then wash it off you can acctually see the oil leaking off the tire. and when your done its nice a clean.

 

I clean mine with Zano car wash and then use the same Zano wax I use on the car on the stock rims.

 

All you need is soap and water (I use the Meguiar's Gold Class).

 

Wash mine with Zaino car wash also , then rinse well.
I keep them protected by applying Wheelwax a few times a year, and it really helps to repel the brake dust and they do seem to stay cleaner.

 

Like above, use car wash liquid. I use Gold Class car wash on them. I also wax them with my car wax (Menzerna FMJ) every couple of months. It helps keep any brake dust off and makes it easy to clean.

 

I use to use wax on my wheels but since I live in hawaii and due to the heat and then the heat the rims experience from driving etc... I just decided to save myself the elbow greese and use soap and water. Along with a polish which make the rims shine between washes I never felt that waxing the wheels made a difference.
