question about manual shift mode

I have a question regarding the manual shift mode in sedan. First, in the manual it states that "when vehicle speed decreases, the transmission automaticaly shifts down and shifts to 1st." How come mind doesnt' do that. Am I supposed to drive at a particular speed in order for the automatic downshift to work? Should I take the car to the dealer and have them take a look at it? Thank you.

Re: question about manual shift mode

What it means is that say you are in 4th and when you come to a stop, it will automatically downshift to 1st. Or say you are in 5th and slow down to 3mph, it will downshift to 2nd or 3rd (whatever the corresponding gear would be) so that the engine does not stall.

Re: question about manual shift mode

I guess I need rephrase my question a bit. My question is that as indicated by manual that the transmission will automatically shift to the 1st when stopped. By 1st I mean, will the gear selection indicator show "1" on the display or will it just stay in whatever the gear selection I've selected. Will the indicator show a succession of downshifting from 5, to 4, to 3, to 2, and then to 1?

The display will stay in the gear you selected.

Re: question about manual shift mode

The indicator will never show the actual gear your are in. It only shows the max gear the tranny will upshift to.

Re: question about manual shift mode

Re: question about manual shift mode

The sedan "manual" mode is not a gear selector, it's a max gear selector. If you realize this, then it all makes sense. You're just telling the transmission which gears it's allowed to use (from 1st through whatever shows on the dash display) -- and the automatic tranny still does it's own thing.
