Belt snapped !!!

Well not yet, but I'm definetly not going to drive until I replace it.

I was at the G Squad meet today when I noticed a weird clanking sound coming from the engine. Upon further inspecting, I realized one of my belts is half the width of another member's car... looks like mine has been coming apart and is in really bad condition. I think that's what the noise was, if not, glad I still found out! Imagine it snapping while I'm driving on the highway?

Anyway, where can I buy some new belts? I've only been able to find belts for aftermarket pulleys. I'm looking for stock replacement, or maybe something nice like Gates if the price difference isn't too much. So does anybody know any sites? I'll check with my local AutoZone first, but want to have a backup plan.

Thanks in advance.

38k miles... is this a common problem? Haven't heard of this happening to anybody else.

You can get belts at any auto parts store. NAPA has Gates belts.

38k is a decent life for a belt. You should do a quick inspection when you change your oil. I change mine around every 15k except for the small Stillen blower belt which I change ~6-9k. The heat here in Phoenix kills my belts.

I have around 42,800 miles on my G, and the dealership says that I'm due for a belt change. However I'm probably planning to try to do the replacement myself since I did it before on my previous car (Lexus ES300), and it wasn't too difficult (took about 20-30 min). I'm thinking of looking into the Goodyear Gatorback belts as they are pretty quiet belts, last a long time and can be found at any Advance Auto Parts store.

The dealer told me at around 30k that my belts were a bit cracked and recommended replacement. Looking at them myself, one was not cracked at all and the other was, but had very small cracks in it. I waited about 4k more miles and then replaced both belts - got them at NAPA.

I did some checking on the web and I was surprised to see that replacing belts at 30k was pretty normal. Seemed early to me, but since I did it myself it was very cheap. Both belts total were like $30 if I remember correctly?

In any event, even if one of your belts snapped you would not have been hosed on the highway.

I posted a pretty good DIY on changing both of the belts. Its in the DIY section. You can do it yourself for maybe 40 dollars. Dealer will charge 200...

Great DIY thread!! But I'll probably just have my mechanic do it for me.

I'm thinking, since he's gunna be doing that already, maybe I should get some aftermarket pulleys too...

uh oh...i have 64k miles..i haven't looked at them yet. I bought the car with 27k miles on it so hopefully the guy before me changed it.

edit: Wait a sec, are there more belts than the ones listed? Is there like a main drive belt? Like a belt that if it should break, you can't move or go anywhere?
