Maybe there is a little marketing going on there. I dunno.
It's just like saying the 3 series or the IS, etc. They are just trying to fit in.

you know, as far as displacement is concerned, the IS350 is putting down 13.2 second quarter mile and still get decent gas mileage out of a 3.5 liter.
The new focus of the industry is smaller engine, more power, better fuel efficiency. don't you think they wouldve realeaed a bigger engine this year to compete with the IS350, nissan isnt dumb, they put down 306 out of a 3.5 because of limitations due to competing with the industry standards.

as far as the "G", its just like the"M' or the "Q"... and they probably do want to change the way people refer to the G...

if they are behind engine options, they wont change displacement, i mean seriously does G37 even sound good? no way... 3.7liter sounds too big for the average consumer

my prediction is 2.5 liter v6, if they drop a 4.5 8cylinder in the G it would potentially smoke the M45, there would be too much competition between the models.

They could always under power it, but thats like BMW's 335i and e46 m3 and next gen m3 ..definately a conflict of interest between the models. the new 335i shares the same engine as the supra, 3L TwinTurbo inline 6cyl that can be pushed to high HPandTorque numbers. aka project car that can and will smoke an NA v8 m3 (which btw they cannot make faster than the new m5) JUSTSOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT
