30,000 Mile Service??

Im at the 30K mark in just over a year, should I let my dealer perform the 30K service, or should I do most of it myself? I know for sure I need breaks and that isnt covered in the $350+ charge for the 30K...

Just wanted to see what everyone else is doin..

Is this the original brakes, or a second set? And why is the 30k so expensive, looks like it is mostly "inspection"! I would look into another mechanic doing the brakes though, the dealer's always tend to be high on this stuff!

Re: 30,000 Mile Service??

I had my 30,000 service last month. For my automatic transmission,
the fluid was flushed and refilled. I didn't let them rotate and balance
the tires, as there was no steering wheel shake. They did all the
inspections and such, no air filter change as I have the Stillen HiFlow
AirBox. The front pads were toasted as were the rotors, total cost was
around $750, mostly for the brake work. Funny, I asked if they would
do a radiator flush and refill. They said that was to be done at
50,000 miles. I might get that done soon, as I would feel better with
it flushed earlier.

Cato, you say your pads and rotors were bad and were replaced. Did you notice anything during driving that indicated they needed replacement, like brake squeeling or less stopping power? Just curious, as I have hit 25k miles now and haven't replaced my brakes, but haven't noticed any problems with them yet.

Yes these are the original brake pads... I drive all highway miles.. Yea the 30K service is expensive and its just mostly checks. I'll just do the brakes myself then...

Thanks :-)

Re: 30,000 Mile Service??

ncozby,

Noticed nothing! As a matter of face, just 3700 miles prior I was told
by another dealer that my front breaks were fine. Obviously they were
full of ****, I won't go to that dealer anymore as I have other issues
with them. I was so upset that I asked to see my old rotors. They were
truly shot, as the outermost part was way thicker than where the pads
grab. They didn't come close to minimum thickness. I drive mostly
city miles in Houston, and I baby my brakes, never hard on them.
The pads were replaced all around at 16,500 miles, when I bought
the car used. It looks the previous owner (leasor) was hard on the
brakes. Oh well......It drives great and the new brakes are super!

I plan on having my brakes checked by another garage when the time comes, that's a ways off since mine is still new, been using him for years, and they do good work and would cost a helluva lot less than the dealer! I had front brakes on an '87 F-150 wear down and score the rotors, and made no noise or gave any indication, noticed it when I was washing the vehicle one day, damn!
