Cool 2004 G35x Owners - Reliability? MPG?

Greetings! I'm a previous Infiniti owner ('01 G20, '02 QX4, both recently sold) that is in the market for an AWD car and I will likely be purchasing a G35x. I was able to drive plenty of them thanks to tons of warranty work Infiniti had to do on my QX4 (never buy a used car that was owned by a rental company, lol). I've looked at other AWD cars on the market, and still feel that the G35x is superior in all the ways that I've come to expect from Infiniti over the years of being a dedicated Infiniti owner myself. I can already envision the Stillen body kit.

It seems that the market is full of '04 G35x's at great prices, with relatively low mileage, but I'm curious as to the overall reliability and gas mileage you guys are getting with the 04 year models? I know '04 was the first year for the x, which makes me wonder if I should spend the extra cash and grab an '05 instead, especially if the case turns out at the '04s had some issues...

Thanks & Happy Holidays!

I just made the switch to Infiniti recently. I did a ton , probably to much leg work. I found the 04 prices were holding pretty strong and for not much more I could get myself into an 06 as they were blowing them out the door! I drive 45k per year and plan to keep this car for some time. I am currently getting around 21mpg on the highway @ 80mph running 87 octane. I ran a tank of premium the other day to see if I would do better and well I did not. I live in AWD country and have owned Audi and Subaru(true AWD systems) and can't wait for the snow to fall so I can test this electronic system out and provide everyone with my perspective. Good luck I obviously thought is is the right car and have no regrets at this point!

Thanks for the response, I guess I should at least test-drive a Subaru; we have snow on the ground right now with plenty more falling hourly.

I've got an '04x with about 30K on her. The only problem I've had is the compression rod issue, which is not unique to the AWD variant of the car. I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a sporty AWD car. Oh, and I'm getting about 19 mpg in the city and slightly better on the highway (maybe 20-21 mpg). Get the G - you won't be disappointed.

I have 37k on mine and it has been great. If I take away the power and drive it in manual mode in 5th gear. I got close to 23mpg but if you leave it in Drive you will get about 20mpg with driving on a moderately heavy foot. No complaints except for the rattles but that is to be expected with this car. Hope this helps

Sounds like an '04 will work out well. My G20 was the worst car for rattles that I've ever owned (also the slowest and most under-powered); I've grown accustomed to it by now.
