I'm ready to RUMBLE!
I'm ready to RUMBLE!
Based on posts by GSedan and others around here, I had a glass pack (i.e. straight-through replacement of the sedan premuffler) installed today. It cost $100 installed.
Under 2000 rpms the car sounds FABULOUS. It's not intrusive by any means, just a much lower-pitched rumble than stock and a *lot* more masculine sounding.
It's been a while since I heard the coupe exhaust note, but I think it's fair to say that the sound of my sedan is approaching the sweetness of the coupe's.
BTW, I kept the premuffler. Holy schtuff that thing is HUGE. I had no idea from the photos I had seen how big that thing would be in person.

Re: I'm ready to RUMBLE!
did you go with the magnaflow? does your car feel any faster or just the sound. so it awsome right? i really want that low end rumble/burble that the sedan is deprived of. i may have to do this mod in the near future.
Re: I'm ready to RUMBLE!
The Magnaflow distributor in my area doesn't stock the exact size and recommended using one of the pipes they had in stock. Both are a simple "straight-through" design.
I asked him if it would make a performance or sound difference--he said no. I have no reason to doubt that since he stood to make about $50.00 more if I went with the Magnaflow name.
I haven't had a chance to exhaustively test (pun intended), since the only driving I've done with the glass pack is from the muffler shop back to my desk. The install was done during my lunch break
I did have a chance to gauge the sound, however, and as I said before... It's pretty sweet. Definitely a worthwhile $100 upgrade.
Sooner or later I'll get a full aftermarket exhaust (assuming one actually materializes "30-days from now" ha ha ha), but this will do nicely for now!!

Re: I'm ready to RUMBLE!
Any pics? This is a great mod for anyone who wants a more aggressive exhaust note for relatively next to nothing. Don't know if any power is to be gained, but should save about 20lbs in weight.

Re: I'm ready to RUMBLE!
It's a straight pipe design similar to the one shown in <a href="https://g35driver.com/forums/showthreaded.php?Cat=&Board=1&Number=127964&Search =true&Forum=All_Forums&Words=magnaflow&Match=Entir e%20Phrase&Searchpage=0&Limit=25&Old=3weeks&Main=1 27347">this thread</a>. The only difference is that mine is 18" long so they grafted a 4 inch section of pipe along with it when they did the weld.
The sound does not get louder when you punch it because the sound of the intake at higher RPMs easily overtakes it. It's really not obnoxious AT ALL. It's just deeper and subtley louder. It's most audible up to 2000 RPMs when giving easy throttle.
Let's put it this way... I can totally tell a difference in the tone but if I didn't tell my wife I did the mod she would probably not even notice (i.e. she's not much of a car enthusiast).
I wasn't looking for something goofy loud. Just subtle depth. That's exactly what I got.
A BIG thanks to GSedan35 and other who have posted their experiences with this mod. I would never have thought of it on my own.

Re: I'm ready to RUMBLE!
I had an Allied 18" Glasspack installed in my G a while back and it was definitely one of the best upgrades. Took ~25 lbs. of deadweight out of the car and gave it an exhaust note that I would put up against the coupe anyday.
Steve, just wait til you have the opportunity to go through a tunnel, hopefully by yourself with the window down, and open up the throttle. I won't go as far as saying that it sounds like Schumacher's F1, but you will be amazed.

al503,
I agree with your assessment. I also went with a 4"x18" Allied glasspack since I couldn't get a 22" Magnaflow on short notice. While the sound of a good exhaust note is very subjective, I really like how my car now sounds. It seems to be real close to my buddy's stock 350Z exhaust note.

Re: I'm ready to RUMBLE!
As I posted in a separate thread, here's the recording I made tonight. I apologize for the low-resolution. You might have to turn up the volume a bit to get the idea.

Re: I'm ready to RUMBLE!
I installed 20" length 6" round Bullet stainless premuffler.
It costs $110 installed.
The sound looks like heaver than 4" muffler's. Anyway I love the sound.
Next time, I will install injen CAI on my G.

Re: I'm ready to RUMBLE!
Isn't the shape of the premuffler supposed to be part of the car's underbody aerodynamics? Will the benefits of sound and possible performance outweigh the loss of aerodynamics if so?

Re: I'm ready to RUMBLE!
Well, none of the aftermarket exhausts I've seen have a honking 30 pound premuffler in the middle of them and they all advertise HP gains.
For that matter, the stock G35 coupe and the 350z don't have that thing either. I'm not sure why the sedan would need it for aerodynamics if those cars don't.
