Car has 25K miles on it and the transmission seems fine. Its starts out a bit notchy when cold (<20degf), otherwise its fine after a few minutes.

Has anyone out there used a high end synthetic lubricant in their trans? My son used Royal Purple trans fluid in his VW GTI and it made a world of difference.

Still original at 31k but after changing the lube to RedLine MT 90 at 30k, it's been leaking. It seems to be coming outta the rear seal. I put in just over 3 qts, made sure it was just up to the bottom of the fill hole, so I know it's not overfilled. Anyone else have this problem? Any ideas before I go to the dealer.

I dropped mine off last Tuesday night so it would be cold for Wensday morning. They ordered it that day and it came in Saturday. We had below zero temps here Monday and Tuesday so the guy that diagnosed the problem was off so they had to wasit till someone else finished up another car to start on mine. They called yesterday and told me it was done but we got 3.5 inches of snow and I had there X so i told them i would be in today to get it. My 6mt doesnt like move in snow at all.

That makes sense now that you explained that they kept it after the found the problem.
With mine, they found the problem and ordered the new tranny but gave me back my car to drive while the part came in. That was two weeks by itself.
Hope yours is better after the repair...got my last night and it was night and day diff. I paid for the clutch replacement but it was worth it for the free labor.

My tranny is a little on the rough side as well, No grinding, even worse when cold. Downshifting to second in the cold is the worst. Sometimes won't even go. Not too bad once it warms up though. Is that a sign of the synchros, or just the norm for these 6MT's?

Now with the second tranny the shifting is even worse. I have a lot of trouble going into gears, it just fights me. Very rough. I can also slip the shifter out of 5th without pressing the clutch since the swap. I took it to the dealer and they said it was fine and you should be able to pull a shifter out of gear on almost any tranny. The way it shifts now it's taking the fun out of driving the car.

On the 2nd now...

I'm heading to the dealer in a few hours to pick up my '03 6MT with a new transmission, clutch, and pressure plate installed. I'm currently at 37,000 miles and have just under two years left on the powertrain warranty.

Hopefully I won't have any issues with the new tranny...because forced-induction is right around the corner if I can take care of my oil-burning engine next!
