Well if he is getting tt'ed I'm hoping the shop will be able to install a 6mt.

It's not worth it. Just trade in your car or get a valve body upgrade.

A valve body does nothing more than raise the line pressure. It does nothing to improve tranny strength and anyone that tells you differently is lying to you. The advantage to the valve body is that it increase line pressure and ultimately shift speed and reduces slippage. The benefit is reduced heat which is the number one killer of autos. To truely increase strength, you must replace the clutches, sprangs, and maybe even the gears. Good supporting mods are a valve body and tranny cooler.

Pushing anything over 300wtq on the 5AT is not a great idea. Pushing 350wtq and you're walking on egg shells if you expect to see any real life out of the tranny (20K+ miles with that power).

Also, steer clear of any company or shop that quotes you "beefed" up trannies in HP. Trannies are rated in TQ, not HP. There's a big difference between a 700hp F1 motor and a 700hp Viper V10. One makes 300 ft/lbs tq and the other makes 650+. Big difference.

Thanks guys for all the info I think I will give it a shot anyway. I will just do the VB upgrade and Tranny Cooler and have SGP tune it for me! Then when the time comes I will rebuild the tranny and make it stronger!

We have done severall TT'ed 5AT G's ranging from 370-500WHP. On some automatics we have done just valve body upgrades, others get the tranny cooler, VB upgrade, torque converter, and sometimes clutch packs. There is never any guarantee on the tranny holding up to a certain power, people drive different and some will hold up, and some might not. We have never seen a customer of ours have any significant tranny problems 5AT or otherwise from the added power. Only seen one screwed up 5AT ever, and that was stock 5AT on a Greddy TT'ed car that was screwed up bad before we ever even got it.

Can discuss this more for you guys on the phone or just PM me.

If I was to add major power to a G/Z I wouldn't waste my time with the 5AT either. It's great in stock and close to stock applications, but otherwise, it's a bit weak. The 6MT is far from perfect, but it can handle a more power and usually the only that will go bad with a significant power increase is the clutch and that's a simple fix.

If I was going to make a strip only G/Z then I'd forego the 5AT and 6MT and get a built GM TH400 4-speed auto that's more than capable of holding 700+wtq Sub 10-second single turbo Supras, Buick Grand Nationals, 350Zs, F-Bodies, etc, swear by that tranny.
