Starter/starter solenoid question

Hey Guys,
Good forum. Just a quick question.
Had the key in the ignition and wasn't too sure whether the car was on or not. Went ahead and started it up, all went well.
Question is as follows:
If the car was indeed on, could the starter/starter solenoid be damaged or has Infiniti taken any precautions from such possible mechanical mistake?
Also, car wouldn't really start up (engine etc.) if it was already on, correct?
Thanks in advance.

The starter would grind. It's not too big of a deal but can harm the starter if you do it for too long or too often.

Thanks for the response.
Starter didn't grind - car started up as usual.
I'm guessing car must have been off then since it'd grind and wouldn't re-start...
Too much stress!

Next time check your tach and see if it is running or get an exhaust so you can hear it.

some cars are getting smart. i think toyotas and others (maybe ours). the ecu knows when the car is running so if you crank again the ecu prevents the starter from energizing and no grinding.

can anyone confirm?

Forget the exhaust, install a flashing light on the dash to let you know when it is running.Or walk around to the front and see if your day lights are on.I can't believe this!

even better would be to put in a kill mechanism to the starter so that it doesn't have power if the engine is running.. can be done using a simple relay.
