Auto Sedan Exhaust

This may be a stupid question but my muffler has two tubes coming from it. When I turn on the car only the left one is working. The dealer said that the right one will work when you are stepping on the gas or pump in fast motion. Is this true? Excuse me if I am not using the correct terminologies.

Re: Auto Sedan Exhaust

I believe the mufflers on our cars have a variable opening function. At higher rpms another outlet opens up to reduce back pressure. In the brochure they are described as "variable capacity mufflers". ..Glad to help.......

Re: Auto Sedan Exhaust

The second exhaust outlet is only used when needed, ie at higher RPMs and when the car is under load, etc

new technology I assume, think about how much it costs when the time comes to replace it.

Re: Auto Sedan Exhaust

I just spoke to the parts Mgr. at my local dealer about these mufflers. Right now they're $455.47 CDN per to replace.. He said as things get 'cranked up' and demand increases, the price will fall dramatically. (he quoted Coupe price)
So it seems when the time comes to replace it, the price should be more reasonable. As far as rusting out and wear and tear due to short trips- that's probably not warranty. We all know that to 'dry' a muffler out properly it takes at least 10 miles or more of driving. But with care he said they should last the 4 yrs. of the manufacturer's warranty which would cover things like seams or hangars that break.
Thought you'd like to know.....................

Re: Auto Sedan Exhaust

This muffler concept is not new so don't worry about it break because it is experimental. Mercedes used mufflers with butterflys in them on the 1990 500SL. It stays nice and quite but when you stand on it...the 302 grunts just like a stang with flowmasters. Ferrari is also using the tech trick in the 360s. Must be good stuff but we knew that, thats why we bought the G!

Re: Auto Sedan Exhaust

Tell us about the Max's muffler. How old, Miles, Short trips,?
The reason I ask is that the Parts guy I talked to said they're covered only thru premature failure (that's apart from any breakage) and that rusting "probably won't be covered".
At those prices I hope the original lasts, even with some short trips and cold weather.

Re: Auto Sedan Exhaust

This muffler came out on the Maxima a few years ago. You can look on Nissan's website for the 2003 Maxima, under Performance, to get to the section with info on the variable-capacity muffler. They have a little quicktime video showing how it works, as well. The 2004 Maxima section doesn't seem to have all these details yet.

Re: Auto Sedan Exhaust

I was refering to my old 1990 Max SE, as I can remember, the first muffler replacement came around in 4 years and it got resty from outside on bottom.

Re: Auto Sedan Exhaust

Yeh, I hope they last too. Parts guy said not stainless. Didn't know the coating on coated steel mufflers. Sounds like something new. We'll see. Other than price, that's all he knows.

Re: Auto Sedan Exhaust

speaking of exhaust, i heard at one point that they were offering the coupes exhaust as a bolt on, an a bumper trim kit to fit in that extra tube. The exhaust adds 20hp, 10 tourqe, plus killer sound. Then it was mentioned to me that this kit was no longer available. If anyone has any info on where to get one,.....................my wallet is standing by

Re: Auto Sedan Exhaust

I'll try and find some info for you... the web page that was offering it was an offical Infiniti Dealership, it seems when they announced the Nismo performance parts would be here in a few months, they removed the ad for the coupe exhaust. I'm gussing they can make more money selling the future Nismo Aftermarket exhaust then the coupes and thus removed the ad in anticipation of the Nismo Exhaust.. I could be wrong, but thats how I see it...
