Just bought G35X. Why 260hp, not 280 like coupe?

Hello all. My wife and I just bought the G35X. It's at the dealership now, we went to check it out yesterday. We didn't take delivery of it because they have to put the rear spoiler on yet, that should be done on Monday. We're very excited to pick it up. We test drove the rear drive car several times, and comparison shopped the '04 Acura 3.2TL (we own a 2001 3.2TL). My wife liked the G35 better. More fun to drive. We then decided to wait for the AWD to come out. We got a fantastic deal on the G35X w/Premium and spoiler. Obsidian black/willow interior.

Now this car is for my wife, not me. We are in our early 30's and my wife is 6 1/2 months pregnant, so this car will not see a drag strip or an autox course (though I may take it autox once just to see what it'll do). So 0-60 times are not the most important thing for us. However, my wife is a car nut like me, and likes horsepower (she's used to riding in my high hp rockets). The extra 300lbs of the AWD system will certainly make a noticable difference in the car. Why does the sedan only have 260hp while the coupe has 280? Is it computer tuning, exhaust, or something else? Can I upgrade the sedan motor to 280 hp WITHOUT voiding the warranty?

Steve

the coupe has more hp because of it's exhaust system
you can add a CAI ,headers and an exhaust system and maybe gain anywhere between 15-30 hp without voiding the warranty.
I suggest you to get the Injen intake and exhaust

Gggggg G Unit....... lol

Klayfish,

All Sedans are rated at 260hp/260ft/lbs-torque. The 6-speed Sedans have proven to be much closer to the Coupe's 280hp/270ft/lbs-torque.

Basicly the AT Sedan's ECUs are de-tuned compared to the other cars. Also, the AT Sedans have an engine driven "mechanical" radiator fan.

The G35X... I don't know. Do you have a mechanical fan or two electric fans? Here's a picture of my car's main fan.

If you want to be practical, in terms of convincing the dealer REALLY EASILY that the warranty is intact, do not get the headers. As far as I know, going "behind the cats" void the warranty on all emissions (including cats, oxygen sensors, etc.) But chaging the exhaust, will only affect the exhaust warranty. Techniocally, you can probabably argue your way out of the headers affecting warranty, but it will a little harder thatn argueing for the exhaust warranty.

I would get a z-tube and a K&N filter, or Z-tube and the Stillen High-flow box. This way they can almost never claim that the warranty is affected (esp.in the former case). And it will cost you about $115 and $315, respectively, and you will probably get 6 hp and 6-12 hp, respectively for the two said mods. Of course, my first recommendation would be the ECU update, because that will be by far the best mod to have and one that the dealer WILL NEVER find out about. But the G35X ECU is likely different from the G35 Sedan ECU. I would call TechnoSquare (www.technosquareinc.com) to see what they can do for you.

The Stillen CatBack exhaust (~$970), combined with the above intake mod, is very likely to but you just beyond the 280hp range (maybe as high as 290hp at the crank). Your low-end rpm band will see a considerably imprvement. So for about $1200 you are right there!!!

My $0.02

After some research, I have found that the ECU upgrade IS detectably by the dealer. If they run a serious diagnostic, they can see the ecu has a different program (because the info from the learning algorithm isn't there.) I have no proof of this, has anyone been to thir dealer and been hooked up to the diagnostic computer?

In theory that's detectable. But the headers and the Authenti Nissan Signtares are simply unchanged. This ECU certainly does NOT allow to be detecte in the same fashion as every other piggyback ECU is. However, everyhting is possible. But I have not seen or heard from my research that the detection is in fact possible.

EDIT: I have in fact been to the dealer a few times... Not sure if they hooked up to the ECU (probably) but they have never said anything to me.

most people dont know this or find out the hard way but that is there i no exhaust made for you g35x. the transfer case in the middle of the car makes the stillen exhausts and others not fit. i had that problem and had to spend an extra 300 dollars on labor and parts for the shop to cut up the x pipe and rebuild it using new pipes. the stillen air box and z tube fit without a problem.

goodluck with your new g35x.

If you got a new baby coming, I would not recommend an aftermrket exhuast system at all... The Aftermarket Exhausts systems for the G35 sedan seem to be a little on the loud side, which is probably not good for when you want your new baby to fall a sleep in the back seat..

Just a thought tho...
