gas smell

First off I have a 2003 Sedan w/ 85,000KMS. I am in Canada and it has been only 5 degrees F for like 10 days solid. Once in awhile i think I smell gasoline. I am a diesel mechanic so i have checked for external leaks and found no signs. Had the plenum cover off and everything. It could just be vehicles around me but i have smelled it about three times in a month.
Any ideas. Also my car gets pretty bad mileage but i think thats expected of these cars.
Thanks

Check around the filler neck and related piping... On some of the early models, there was a recall on the fill pipe way back which may not have been done on your ride.

Have you had the fuel hose recall done? You might have a leak.

Since you are a mechanic, you probably already know not to overfill your tank. Saturates the charcoal filter and causes you to smell gasoline for a while after filling tank. I just threw this in since you said it happens a couple times a month. Does wifey or sig other or anyone else take your car to the gas station?

no, only me. no one else drives my car. first time it clicks i stop filling so i don't think that should be the issue.
