They quoted us price of $31,5- is this good deal or do you think they trying to recoop their profits in fees just as these. Were Financing through are own credit union, and will be paying cash -advice would be appreciated

Re: $499 Documnetary Fee!!!!! Please Help
That's a lot of money for the doc fee. I think consumer reports claims that $50 to $150 is customary. I've paid as much as $200 when I bought my Odyssey Van. I didn't complain then since I got the Odyssey for MSRP and every other dealership was charging $1500 to $2000 over MSRP. Although I did have to drive 200 miles to get that deal. I just checked my papers and 1 year ago when I bought my G35 sedan I paid $45 for the doc fee. I think the dealer has inflated the fee purely out of profit(greed?). Best of luck in negotiating it down; I would definitely complain.

What is this documentary fee you are referring to? I don't see anything like that on my paperwork!

Tell them to blow it out their ****! No way should you pay even $1 for such a fradulent charge. I paid $500 over invoice, no nonsense and make believe charges should apply.

Off the top of my head, that's a reasonable price (31.5K) but the doc fee is nothing but a way to get back some of the good deal.

If I were you I would negotiate from Invoice including doc fee.

You should be able to negotiate that cost out. One bit of advice. Even though your going to finance it with your credit union, don't let them know that. they will think that your taking the Nissan financing. They sometimes get a kick back from that. They might be more willing to negotiate the price lower if they think they will be making money on the financing in the back end.

Re: $499 Documnetary Fee!!!!! Please Help
I was upset when, after accepting what price that was lower than I expected (but more than I would have liked), I had an $89 doc fee added.

I think this is supposed to cover their paperwork, transferring the title, etc. However, I figure that it should be included in the quoted price.

It's what the dealer charges for filling out all the paperwork and registering the car with the DMV.

Well, here they charge $150 (they have it listed as a handling & service fee) plus the tax and license fees, I don't pay the excise tax, and my plate is free.

Re: $499 Documnetary Fee!!!!! Please Help
ya, but the $500 was credited back to your downpayment, wasn't it?

$500 for doc prep fees....WHAT WAS THAT?!?!?
That was the sound of me walking out of the dealership.

Want your G that bad?!?! Consider this...

$500 is a Crawford Plenum

$500 is a full around tint, Z tube & the Stillen Hi-flow

$500 is gas for at least 6 months.

$500 is a car payment.

$500 is one deductible for you first accident (GOD FORBID!)

need I say more? Have a little patience and some extra cash to baby your G!

Cheers, Ted

Actually, I would tell them you have your own financing.. and tell them the payment terms and interest rate. They may be able to beat it.

Re: $499 Documnetary Fee!!!!! Please Help
Sometimes dealers try to sneak in fees for "supposed" services. Find out from the dealer what it is for. If it is not required, tell them to take it out. Hopefully you have not signed anything or paid yet!
When I bought my coupe at Miller (Van Nuys, Calif.) their finance guy tried to sneak in a fee like that and I caught it at the last minute just before writing my check! You really have to read all the papers they hand you and add up all the costs and line items yourself - or you can get taken! Sounds like you caught it though.
I don't know if anyone else has noticed this but at the dealer I was at they had no calculators anywhere - not for salesman and certainly none available if a customer asked. Only the finance guy totaled up the costs on his computer. If I had not gone out to my car and got a calculator and re-added everything, they would have beat me out of the $500 fee (and that is after I had read all of the paperwork and not noticed it!). So be warned...........

I would take a calculator or an excel chart with Time value functions as well. Then you can check the loan math as well. My payment went up mysteriously between the sales office and the finance orfice. And with no add'l fees or principal????

For those of you who missed the wonderful TV lineup Fri night (it snowed I swear) there was an pretty good Dateline on the topic of sneaky charges..and the very clever scam of asking you for more down money after you have had the car for a couple weeks...they prey on low income folks and make then think thier financing fell thru and by this time the poor folks are into thier car so much they pay more.

As far as sneaking in the charges some folks get dinged cuz they dont read whats in front of them and some dont show up anywhere but on the banks copy of the agreement or the drop sheet on the car from the dealer which shows profits by line item. They had people go in undercover and negotiate deals and exposed a major public dealership owner. They would do a deal hammer the sales guy and then leave if the guy haggles with them at all,
