Tonight im coming home and i decide to let the navi tell me my route because i was not 100% sure how to get back home. I make a few lefts and a few rights and before i know it im in the f*cking middle of nowhere taking all these backroads. Pissed me off, all i did was choose shortest distance it didnt mention that it would avoid any semi-major road **** was retarded ended up taking me 30 more minutes than usual.
Its a stock navi on an 05 anyone got any ideas?

never ever select shortest distance! its just that, shortest even if that means taking you through a corn field and over a dry river bed to save 5ft and almost always takes longer.

Shortest time is the best way.

I have an issue with my navi, too....... where I live the FL Turnpike (toll road) is very close to I-95 and they basically follow a similar path. Even if I am already on the turbpike, the NAVI tries to make me change to I-95. I just ignore it.

+1, it can make a big difference. local roads might shave 5 miles, but a can highway shave 20 mins on a longer trip.

shortest time = highway
shortest distance = local streets.
ya ull end up in dense woods even if u pick that option.

my nav is poor also. In selecting from CT to VA and shortest time it will recalculate on its own and add 150 miles through PA etc (and 3 hours). dealer has replaced unit...... and no luck. p*ssing me off.

There is a setting within the unit (I have an 04) where you can enter in your projections for average speed for different road types. The default is enough of a speed difference between 2 lane highways and interstates that, on a longer trip, it pushes too much to get to an interstate that it may add over 100 miles to the trip. It is how it comes up with estimates for shortest TIME

Be realistic, though. Factor in small towns.

You could be experiencing an ID ten T error. Make sure you don't have the avoid freeway square checked. Otherwise it will send you down every surface street and back road around

I'm not 100% sure but I think there is a default setting telling the nav unit to avoid toll roads. I haven't bothered to explore this further as there are little to no toll roads in Cali. Also I've noticed the navi can get confused when you are running next to the freeway say on a frontage road, it thinks you are on the freeway. One fix I've used is to "zoom in" and it should put you back on the correct road

Doesn't seem worth $190
