climate control in the cold

Greetings G Drivers,
Have question re: climate control. It seems that when I set my ACC on "auto", air comes out of the bottom (feet) vents. The air flow never seems to come out of the uppper vents. On these cold mornings in Indy, in effort to warm my bones, I manually switch the air flow to the upper vents, but then I'm not on "auto" anymore...is this "ignorant user error" ? Will the air eventually come out of the upper vents if I am patient enough ? Thanks.

I have found the auto AC takes some getting used to, this is the first vehicle I've had with it, I do notice it doesn't come on until the engine warms a bit, I have also found doing manual, and just setting the temp works okay as well!

Re: climate control in the cold

Auto, by default, puts heat on the feet and will not switch. On the other end of things, A/C comes out of the upper vents.

The ACC is programmed that way. Since heat rises, it will apply it to the feet and allow it rise and heat the cabin. Warm, moist air will also fog your cold windows, so it's attempting to prevent that too.

BTW, I think it's great that the ACC doesn't kick on until warm air is available. It's always seemed to me that on a cold day, no air is better than cold air. Also, don't forget to use your heated seats if you have them.

Oh, I didn't mean it bothered me it didn't come on until warmth was available, I agree that is a good feature!

I like that feature too, I just wish it could do the same for the AC.

Re: climate control in the cold

My problem is the 'AC' light comes in sometimes as in Air Conditioning. When it's 2 degrees outside?!!! Why?

Re: climate control in the cold

The A/C will cycle on if the temp. rises above the temp. that you set. If you set the ACC to 72 and the temp. goes above that, the A/C will cycle in an attempt to bring the temp. back down to 72.

If I understand this right, AC means temperature, not just cold, but warm as well!

That's right bro. With the system on auto, it will call for both heat and cold depending on the temp setting and outside temp.
I believe even in the cold that the A/C will come on slightly to dehumidify the air to help prevent window fog and frost. Not enough that you'd get cold, but enough to eliminate moisture.

Re: climate control in the cold

If you set the vent positioning with the Manual button and set the Temperature to what you want, the computer will automatically take care of the fan speed depending on how cold or warm it is inside the cabin. For this winter I just set the manual to upper and lower vents, set the temp to 70 F, and let the computer take care of the rest. When the engine warms up enough, then the fan will come on. When it gets warm enough inside the fan will back off to level 1 or 2. I find this works great for me. No fogging in my area unless it's a really rainy day when there's more humidity in the air.

Occasionally, I've noticed that in Auto, the vents will go from the usual foot position, to the divided foot and face setting. Not sure when and what logic applies though.

I noticed the same thing yesterday. I'm still getting used to this
Automatic Cool/Heat system. Last summer, air would automatically
come from the upper vents. Now that it is cooler (Houston doesn't
really get cold), air automatically comes from the foot vents.
Yesterday I noticed it switch from foot vent to split upper/foot.
Actually it's a pretty nice system.

Re: climate control in the cold

I had alot of trouble this weekend keeping my sedan windshield frost/fog free while on auto econ. I forced it to defrost only, of course, but then my feet would get cold. When set on combined defrost/feet, the defrost wasn't strong enough to keep the far left side of the windshield fog free without blasting the fan and, subsequently, the overall inside heat level. I finally found that perfect balance by cracking the driver window ever so slightly to "pull" the defrost heat further left. Man, the things we put up with to drive this car!
