Brake clunk

So I brought my car in to the dealer because of a clunk noise when braking and the car comes to rest, especially on moderate-to-hard braking. Dealer service rep notes that my rotors/pads are aftermarket, and after inspecting it, they tell me that everything's ok with my car, but the clunk noise is because my rotors are drilled. The tech says that it's common to hear a slight clunk noise from drilled rotors. Does that sound right to the rest of you? just asking, since I've never had slotted/cross-drilled rotors before these...

I think they are wrong, I have never had a problem like that with any of the drilled or slotted rotors I have had.

I kinda thought so too, but I really don't know enough to refute their explanation. If any Infiniti service techs on here want to chime in, that'd be appreciated. The only way I personally would be able to prove them wrong is to switch to OEM brake pads/rotors and see if it still makes noise, and I don't think it's worth the money to do that, especially since I just had new pads/rotors installed about 2 months ago. The service rep originally started to tell me that possibly my calipers were moving because they were "aftermarket", but when I told him that I have stock calipers, he said he needed to clarify with his service tech and get back to me (I gave him the benefit of the doubt at that point). Then he called me a few minutes later and explained that everything was fine and it was normal due to my drilled rotors...

I would have another brake shop take a look at it.

Unfortunately, I did...Firestone said it was my brake power booster, and it would cost $900 to replace....yeah--ok... Then Firestone's "other" mechanic says, "That kids got it wrong--it's gotta be something else." I believe the "other" tech, but I didn't care to pursue it further at that point because I didn't wanna get him fired...Lots of help they were...

Wow, this is turning into a real pain. I would try someone else like a shop that does more brake work like Brake Masters, etc.

Is this sound after the car comes to a complete rest, and when you fully release the brake pedal before accelerating, is it making this sound? I see you are from Aurora, it has been pretty wet in Chicago the last few days from the rain, etc. I get a clunk noise after the car comes to a complete rest and beginning to accelerate only on wet conditions from the brake pads getting wet. I was told it was normal from Infiniti and also when we had a Passat as well.

No, it sounds when I come to a complete stop and my foot stays on the brakes, when stopping moderate-to-hard. If I let my foot off at the end and coast to a stop, or if I stop slow, then there's no sound...

Ive heard the same kind of noise on my sedan.......I dunno not what it is and it doesnt happen all the time.......I figured it had to do with the anti lock brakes cause my integra used to do the same thing but it was a series of bumps instead of just one hard one........

Call these guys and make an appointment. I have a buddy who lives in Hinsdale who gets all his service done by them and says they are honest. They are in Elk Grove Village, IL.

Are you sure your rotors aren't warped? The dealer told me that some cross drilled/slotted rotors warp easily.

No, the rotors aren't warped. As soon as I have time, I'll go get a third opinion. Thanks for the shop reference, Kimbo80.

I beleive i know what u are refering to and i went thru it myself.
When i first go my 05, rode it for a lovely month until i started to notice the clunk u were talking about when coming to a complete stop.
Called up my dealer and they said that the clunk sound is from new brakes. He said ride it for a while and itll go away. faster way is to rid it is to go 10-15 mph with ur other foot on the brake. It soon went away after that.
I think its cuz of new brakes. nothing major

Hmmm...I may give that a try. Might be a little tricky with a 6MT...

Did you do the pad and rotor beak-in procedure?
