Weird display problem
Weird display problem
I picked up my G35 Sedan from the dealer back in April 2003. While they were showing off the car, I noticed a problem with the display in the center of the dashboard (with compass, temperature, etc.). It was flickering: segments were turning on and off randomly (e.g., it would flicker between showing the correct temperature and some random number). It was pretty clear that it was just a problem with the display itself and not the temp sensors or controls.
Anyway, so I asked the guy about it and he basically blew it off and started up the car. This stopped the flickering, so I didn't think much more of it.
Over the past eight months, its happened a bunch of more times. I'm pretty certain that it has something to do with the car getting wet. The first time it happened (at the dealer), they had just finished washing it. Subsequent times, it happened after the car had been sitting out in the rain for the day and sometimes after washing it (not every time, though).
So, I finally took it in to the dealer today to have them take a look at it. Unfortunately, they couldn't get it to happen and they said that they couldn't do anything without seeing the problem.
Has anybody seen this before? My guess is that the wiring going to the display is getting wet somewhere, causing the display to freak out. Does anybody know where the wiring for the display runs or where water might be getting in to cause this problem? Any ideas on a sure-fire way to reproduce the problem so that the dealer will actually take a look at it?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Weird display problem
I noticed the same thing. I spoke to my dealership and the note on my last service bill is...
"PO HEATER CONTROL AMP ON ORDER"
This means that some type of amp is on order and they will add this to the temp gauge and hopefully fix this issue. Hope this helps. Alta Infiniti is my dealership in Toronto, Canada.

It's still a G thang!!

Re: Weird display problem
This happened to me a few times too. My guess was a lose connector or something. I was at the dealer after it happened once, and they blew it off and asked me to come back if it happened more often. It happened a couple of more times quickly thereafter, but I haven't noticed it in the last couple of months or so.
