Passport 8500 Hardwire follow-up

I finally got around to hardwiring my detector today and I have to give a big thank you to Colonel and his post in the DIY section https://g35driver.com/forums/showfla...sed&sb=5&part=. It was VERY helpful. I got tired of the constant theft concern and the look of the cord dangling in the low window position. The hard wire is the way to go. Now the unit is high enough its hidden by the window tint.

Some coments on the original post:
-Colonel warned about the space being tight, but it is real tight and wires very short. the Tap-In connectors are definately the only way to go.
-The wire is actually RJ11 not RJ45, the latter being the larger 8 wire cat 5 computer style. I used a regular phone cord (black) and it worked fine.
-The power from this source (courtesy lights) is constant on, not ignitioned keyed, so you have to remember to turn off and on the radar.
-Once the wiring is done, the other half of the install was finding a good place to put the detector. I wanted it between the mirror and headliner, but it wont fit. So had to option for a position about an inch to the right of the mirror. Unfortunately this position will restrict movement of the passenger side visor, but could not be avoided.
-One last tip: I didn't like the stock window clip because it wobbles too much so I wrapped some electric tape along each of the sides of the mount tab, being careful not to block the latch - that did the trick and it sits much tigher now.

Thanks again and keep up the good posts. The FAQ/DIY section rocks... next on my list is the side marker blink mod, fog lamp replacement, grounding kit, maybe an intake mod in the spring.

I've done this as well, but mine turns itself off as soon as I open the door.

Interesting, I double checked mine and the power is constant on, even with ignition off and doors locked. Maybe you tapped a different power source than I did. Do you remember color ?

Sorry, I'm too lazy to do my own work. I had my performance shop do it for me. :^ )

Just out of curiosity, do you have automatic headlights? I'm wondering if it's because of an upgrade I have that cuts that power source.

yes, my 2003.5 has auto headlamp feature, generally don't use it. Interior has standard auto dimming lights.
