6MT Premium Tires ??

Quick question that I searched for with no luck.

I'm picking up my '04 6MT G35 this week and I'm concerned about the tires that are on it. It's a 6MT, Premium, Nav. On the Infiniti website, it doesn't say that it has all season tires on it, while all the other 6MT's at the dealer do. (And building one at Infiniti.com results in them automatically being added.)

Is it possible to get a 6MT with Premium and the summer tires? And, if so, how bad are they in the cold like we are having here in the NE? (I'm in PA) Should I plan on slapping some all seasons on as soon as I get home? I don't plan on driving the car in the snow (have a winter beater for that), so I mainly care about wet/dry performance.

Thanks!

Re: 6MT Premium Tires ??

There are only 3 tires available for the sedans (regardless of transmission).

Goodyear Eagle GS-D (Summer Performance)
Goodyear Eagle RS-A (All-season Performance)
Bridgestone Turanza EL42 (All-season Touring)

It used to be that if you got the winter package, you got the Bridgestones (my car, for instance), regardless of other options (sport pkg, etc.). However, for '04 there isn't a "winter package." I'm not sure what the new rules are for tires in all cases, but if you get a 6MT, I'm pretty sure you'll get the GS-D's. Not that it matters, none of these are exceptional tires in their supposed categories. You'll have to step away from 215/55R17 to get better tires. You can probably convince the dealer to swap your tires for one of the other from that list above from another car they have, but you won't get anything else for free. Some people have suggested taking your new car straight to a Goodyear shop and selling the practically new tires to offset the cost of a better set. Tires for our car generally run around $200/tire for things that fit the stock rim. Check out the Tire/Wheel forum for suggestions on what tires you may wish to purchase, and what sizes to look into. Many, many posts on the subject.

Re: 6MT Premium Tires ??

Went to the Infiniti site and on the "build" screen yes it does say that the all season tires are included, but if you click on it for info it pops up and clarifies things, "Standard on Sedan Leather without Sport Package" so they are NOT really included since the 6MT all come with sport. If you build a regular sedan and click on adding the sport package, it automatically comes with summer tires, you then click on the all-season tire option to change this. When I'm building a 6MT, if I click on adding the winter tire package, it comes up saying it requires that a sunroof be added to the car. So, winter tires do not come standard on the 6mt, your dealer only orders them equipped that way.

My 6mt came with summer tires. I swore off all season rubber a long time ago. Given, I'm not thrilled with the cold weather stick of my Kumho MX's, their's still no way I'll ever run all season every again. I don't have the climate nor driving style that is suited to them. I thought that the stock GS-D's were actually very good tires.

I agree. I had 215/50/17 RSAs on my previous car and they sucked big time. The GSDs are much better. But of course my next set of tires when I upgrade will definietely not be the GSDs.

Thanks.

I'll probably just leave what's on there for the time being. I'm really not concerned about the ultra high performance tires - just want something that's decent in everyday driving and can hold up to a little spirited driving. I'll just have to be careful now that it's cold. Since I won't be driving the car in the snow, it shouldn't be that huge of an issue.

Re: 6MT Premium Tires ??

First post but have been reviewing this forum for months. Recently took delivery of 35x...only 400 miles but thay have been very enjoyable. This is a wonderful car!
Just a quick note re: replacement tires for sedans. I believe I remember seeing a Cooper Performance All Season replacement for the STD 215/55-17's. This isn't a tire carried by Rack but it is clearly noted on the Cooper Tire web site.
Also, is this size also the standard on the V6 Sport Camry Solara?
Again...this being my first post on Driver I wanted to acknowledge all other members who have provided invaluable information before I even sat behind the wheel of our new X.
It was worth the waith of nearly 2 months here on East Coast. Some snow forcasted in next 48 hours and I'll have first hand experience on it's handling.

Re: 6MT Premium Tires ??

According to Infiniti customer service, the all-seasons are all Goodyear RSAs. My Audi A4 came with these and there terrible. My G35X is due Jan. 28th and Michelin Pilot Sport A/Ss (235/50/17) are on there way from discounttiredirect.com. BTW, they are giving a $60 instant rebate on a set of four Michelins until 1/31/04 and they were already the cheapest, including shipping. ($204 - 15 each, delivered).
