Re: Auto Start

Is that the command start? The one where you use the key fob to start the car up? If you did then you should know that the security feature of requiring a key with the chip in it has been nullified. In order to start the car with an auto start they have to trick the computer into thinking that the microchip is always in there.

Re: Auto Start

The way they do it is to use an extra chip and plug it into the computer using some sort of converter. So any normal copy of the key can start the car now.

Re: Auto Start

Don't cars from other manufacturers that have this kind of feature direct from the factory require the coded key in the ignition before they let you move?

Re: Auto Start

This feature may also affect your insurance discounts for your Anti-Theft system. Watch out you can really lose a nice discount.

Re: Auto Start

I don't believe that it is a factory option or the dealers here in Canada would be all over it with our winters. It was probably a dealer installed option which would have to be done the way any after market starter does....as I discribed.

Re: Auto Start

Feature is nice to have, but I wouldn't sacrifice my programmed key for this. I rather be cold than make it easier for people to steal my G.

It's still a G thang!!

Re: Auto Start

Hold on fellows...
I have it and I love it...
Here's what the dealer told me.
First... I had to get it installed by the dealer or else the car warranty would not be valid.
Second... He told me they would hide akey with the chip in it some place in the car so it could start.
Third... If I start the car and someone breaks in to steal it they would have to step on the break to shift it into drive, when you step on the brake without the key in the ignition the car stalls...
Any other questions, it is awsome...

Re: Auto Start

Have you ever owned a car with command start before?? That happens with any car if there is no key in the ignition, regardless of whether it comes with a chip in the key as a security feature,....what I am pointing out is that any key, copied from yours, without the chip in it can start the car now. I suggest you try to start the car with the emergency card key that you got and see what happens. If it doesn't start you shouldn't have much to worry about....although I'm not sure if the key is specifically cut so it can only open the door regardless of the chip, like they used to do with old GM's having a separate key for door and ignition.

I think the only way to really test this is to get a copy of your primary key made and check if it starts the car.

Re: Auto Start

The credit card emergency key will turn the ignition cylinder. It's not cut special, it's only missing the chip. The valet key has the chip, but is cut different to not work in the glove box.
