Ultra high performance in cold or heat... Ultra shock resistance... High tolerance for accidental deep discharge... OPTIMA® is the ultimate battery for any vehicle that really needs to start. OPTIMA batteries are preferred by emergency vehicle crews because they deliver more power in tougher conditions than any other battery. Collectors and RV owners appreciate the Optima's ability to hold a charge up to 3 times longer than conventional batteries. 1st Optima pays the shipping costs to 48 states, so prices quoted are your total delivered cost. No handling fees, and no sales tax outside Nebraska.

OPTIMA® Yellow Top and Blue Top battery models are the power source of choice for deep-cycle power needs. Compared to conventional batteries, voltage output from an Optima battery is more uniform across the discharge curve, more deep cycles are tolerated, and they can be mounted in any position with zero corrosion and zero leaks. They recharge faster than conventional batteries, and typically deliver 1.5 - 2x the service life. Yellow Top and Blue Top batteries also offer excellent performance as starter batteries for dual-purpose applications. Call us to order the premium power source for heavy cycling applications. With free shipping and no handling fees, prices quoted are your total delivered cost!**

After reading this, I feel like getting the yellowtop. Its a bit more expensive but its lighter and has a longer service life. I don't have a problem starting my car because california is always in decent weather condition and I garage my car. What made you red top guys choose red top instead of yellow?

I chose the red top because it's cheaper and gets the job done. I've had red tops in my last 3 cars and absolutely love them. If you aren't using you're electronics for long periods of time with the car off then I don't think the yellow top is worth the extra money. Just my opinion.

Deep Cycle refers to applications that typically discharge 60 to 70% or more of the battery capacity. An automotive battery is an SLI battery (Starting, Lighting & Ignition.) Its plates are designed to deliver maximum power for a short duration. Starting an engine typically discharges an SLI battery 3% or less. When an SLI battery is used in a deep-cycle application or in a vehicle with heavy accessory loads, the battery life will be shortened proportionally to how deeply and frequently it is discharged.

The OPTIMA Deep Cycle battery uses a different chemistry for the plates' active paste material, and a slightly stronger acid. This chemistry allows for a much longer life in deep cycle applications with only a slight reduction in maximum power output.

Another copy paste for those researching...I am guessing...if you draw a lot of power i.e (big system) then get the yellow top. Red top for normal use and it's $12 cheaper. Looks like Redtop for me afterall. I dont want my batt dying on me after a year.

If a deep cycle yellow top dies on you after a year, isn't that an indication that a higher amp alternator is needed instead?

Funny that this thread came back up today. I have been out of the country for the last two weeks and I came home to a very dead 34R. It won't even take a charge. But the old Wal-Mart battery I had on the shelf in the garage in Phoenix heat (120+ in the summer) went in and started right up...

Wow. What would we do without WAL-MART?

I think this is the moral of the story: Yellow top for all of you running high power electronics (amps/subs/non-standard things) Red for the rest.

Yellow will still output the correct voltage even when more of the battery is discharged (hence deep cycle) You can run a deep cycle to almost completely dead and still get it to recharge. Another reason for this would be less of a need for a capacitor for the audio system as the voltage is more stable.

Red will have more initial "kick" (cranking power, reserve, however you want to call it). It will not have as stable of voltage as you discharge the battery more. This is one reason why you might have a dead battery... the voltage has slowly discharged over a couple weeks being hooked up in the car and its not deep cycle so its voltage has dropped below a "crankable" voltage. Red is also what most standard batteries should be compared to.

Personally I would get Red as a main battery, and if I needed a second battery for electronics then definitely yellow for that.
